    South America 2026

Looks like Chile central and northern resorts have done very well with this storm, however Open Snow once again overcalled it by perhaps 2x?

At this point, there wont be much skiing until this storm clears out and mountain ops has 3-5+ days to do avi control, mark hazards, groom, etc. The roads are also going to be tough to plow. I am going to estimate that the mountains will start to open up around August 1. This storm appears...

    Fire Smoke From Canada

The primary areas with fires are the boreal forests that extend across the entirety of northern Canada. Most of this forest is remote wilderness with only spotty small populations. Most of it has no roads, airports etc. Fires are a normal part of the lifecycle of these forest. However, I...

    Fire Smoke From Canada

This is not the competition I was hoping to win. Its crazy to be mid summer and have such polluted air. This smoke pollution is making a Chile trip more appealing. Cant bike, walk, swim, etc outside right now here. The andes should have nice clean air.

    South America 2026

I have not yet skied South American, however Portillo appears relatively small on the trail map. Yes, I could ski many ski areas for a full week, however if traveling so far from home, I would prefer to sample a few resorts. Within the same geographic zone there are the 3 Santiago resorts as...

    Fire Smoke From Canada

Air Quality is awful here in Toronto. Sky is orange. Eyes start ro burn outside. Chile is looking nice and nicer. https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/toronto-air-quality-among-worst-in-the-world-as-heat-wave-drags-on/article_2d0faaa5-e571-43be-89b8-9a86da7188fb.html

Agreed regarding this storm not being chaseable. Avi risk will likely be extraordinary until Aug 1.

Aspen One/SkiCo Updates. (Alterra IPO: Maybe Never)

Agree, this is not how I judge a ski area. Crowding at the parking lots, transportation, lifts is usually my primary indicators. However, many NA ski area foods overall have ++ room for improvement. Gear rentals, I suppose for someone renting at the ski area, this could be a major...

    South America 2026

I agree there is definitely something wrong with the algorithms on OpenSnow, however I a doubtful this is intentional. I have a few speculations, as to what is wrong. Some issues may include storm timing and how it reports the totals for a a future potential store. Is it perhaps adding up...

    South America 2026

MCP must know something about how to run ski areas in marginal areas. They seem to keep expanding in that market. They have had a long stretch of below freezing temps. I suspect they have the same water issues as Colorado/Utah with the majority of their water falling in the winter.

I also have opensnow and was following that storm. The storm didnt vanish, it just got warmer. When I look carefully at OpenSnows forecast for Nevados De Chillian, I see a lot of rain. Looks like they are getting the SA version of the pineapple express. This is metric:

There i no question that trying to plan a trip to SA appears to be a complete gamble. I have some time off the second week of August and have been considering it, However, thats now 1 month away and there isnt any snow.

Colorado Skier Days 2025-26: Collapse 24%, Lowest Since 1991-92

It would not surprise me if ski areas such as Abasin saw a 75% reduction in skiers. Core expert terrain was not even open there in February. I think Pali was open for about 3 weeks the entire season.

    Early Season Alps Destinations

I am considering stopping in Europe on my way to another non-skiing destination next December. My dates would be around December 19-22. I struggle to understand the snowfall patterns in Europe. I am looking for suggestions for either some very snow assured destinations or places that...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Sunshine and Lake Louise seem to benefit very well from the very warm and moisture filled atmospheric rivers that go into BC or Washington. All of interior BC can be getting rain, but the rockies are simply too high and cold, its snow in AB. I have seen several times the AR is bringing rain...

Why North American Ski Resorts Don't Invest in Lifts Like Europe Does

US has a lot more issues regarding legal liability and lawsuits than pretty much anywhere else (Insurance costs). Could this impact the ability to reinvest in infrastructure?
