Here we go again. I'm boycotting Canada until the country gets its fire problem under control.

Canadian wildfire smoke to blanket NYC area through mid-week amid dangerous heat

Smoke from Canadian wildfires will blanket the skies of the Northeast through mid-week, and when paired with hot, humid conditions expected during that same time, it could make for difficult breathing conditions for some.

Well that stinks (literally). I fly into LGA tomorrow afternoon...

Ironically despite multiple big fires in Colo, the smoke has never been particularly bad on the front range this year (excepting Pueblo which is literally right next to the biggest fire).

Obviously not casting blame on ordinary Canadians, but what exactly is being or can be done? Does the sheer scale of the fires -- many dozens, including one that's bigger than the state of Rhode Island -- rule out anything other than praying for rain and cooler temperatures?

Having lived in the northeast most of my life, I don't recall this happening until the last few years and it's pretty awful. I always took clean air (well, no more than a 60 or 70 on that pollutant scale) for granted. Is global warming being blamed?

The primary areas with fires are the boreal forests that extend across the entirety of northern Canada. Most of this forest is remote wilderness with only spotty small populations. Most of it has no roads, airports etc. Fires are a normal part of the lifecycle of these forest. However, I also dont recall smoke issues prior to 2021 or so. I suspect climate change which is worse towards the poles is warming this region. This is likely making the extent of these fires larger. Other than taking steps to prevent climate change, I cant think of much more that could be done.

The Canadian Boreal Forest is enourmous:
  • Canada's Boreal Forest: Approx. 5.52 million square kilometres (2.13 million square miles)
  • Continental United States (Lower 48): Approx. 8.08 million square kilometres (3.12 million square miles)
Canada's boreal forest zone is roughly 68% (over two-thirds) of the size of the continental United States
 
Enjoyed a one hour bike ride on a bike trail in DC burbs on Friday 17 Jul 2026. Few riders out. Quiet, peaceful, but yes quite smokey/hazy. I think our AQI was 200+ that day. Family members told me it was bad that day in Richmond too. I was in Norfolk on Sat and Sun and it wasn't bad.
 
We did have lots of smoke here last week but it rained very hard on Saturday and a cold front came through on Saturday night and pushed the smoke farther South. Sunday was, almost, crystal clear with a Fall-like feel to the air. Another nice day today.

Is that a good idea? I'm perhaps not the right person to question that in view of 3 years of playing soccer in high school in Claremont during the peak SoCal smog years.
