...of each other for one example), crazy amount of crowding, etc... Of all the major Colo resorts I would put this as just about the most 'industrial' ski resort of them all. And the vibe just seems to me a bit like a toned down Hunter too. Absolutely Tons of people going way faster than their...

    East Village at Deer Valley

I am not sure why a funicular system was not explored. But possibly cost, some avalanche exposure, and another 'road' going up the canyon?

    East Village at Deer Valley

Funicular! I wonder how much more that would be than a gondola. Lots, I suspect. BTW, the "pristine quality of LCC" -- didn't that horse leave the barn many moons ago? It's one of the biggest industrial skiing locales in the U.S.

...of reach. Ms. Burton and her husband moved into a camper on her parents’ property. The couple have since managed to find a unit inside an industrial building with no air-conditioning, leaving them wondering if it is the kind of place where they would want to start a family. “We are in this...

A 12 pack lift?!!!! Love to see 12 snowboarders load/unload successfully. That seems almost as excessive as the Lavadinas-fuorcla sura Lift at Laax that rotates 45 degrees so you get the best view of the summit. https://www.wheretoskiandsnowboard.com/news/laax-unveils-porsche-designed-ski-lift/

Credit where it's due -- I borrowed that term from the German speakers on Alpinforum ("Industrieskifahren"). Nine years ago while at Ischgl, I considered going to Serfaus; however, the other smaller ski areas in the Paznaun Valley (Kappl, See, and Galtür) were far more convenient to reach on...

...firm but not frozen as hard as yesterday at Hochgurgl and much more popular than the slushy frontside. This is what James calls “industrial skiing.” The pic is of the 6-pack we are about to board, and at far looker’s right are a gondola and a 12-pack(!). Yes we wanted to check out that...

One of everyone's favorite GP photo ops. You don't get that kind of personality at your industrial ski areas out west! :eusa-snooty:

...cavalierly water is often used out west -- for hundreds of golf courses in preposterous locales (and I say that as a passionate golfer), industrial agriculture, etc. With the recent news about the ongoing mega drought, you have to wonder at what point water is rationed for non-critical purposes.

...of money and work the Chinese were willing to do to hold these games. I do find it somewhat jarring to watch some of the ski venues (like the freestyle ski and snowboarding jumping) that were built in the middle of otherwise industrial Beijing - like those nuclear power plant "smokestacks"...

...pitch has not been my personal experience. As mentioned above, one of my Top 3 reasons for coming over here is to ski smaller non-industrial areas that are still in operation but have all the attractive (to me) NELSAP-y characteristics. That's my personal sweet spot/not shared by most people.

...a tract of mountain homes (from the looks of them, used mostly during warmer weather): Very pleasant to start my trip with a type of ski area that's increasingly rare in North America -- small (comparatively), non-industrial, low-cost, and inviting to anyone who wants to get out on the snow.

Vail Resorts Red Flags in 2021-22

I wasn't aware of that, partially because I've never skied at any of those resorts, which comprise most of France's top industrial-tourism ski destinations. Assuming that my March trip moves forward, Serre Chevalier will be my first Compagnie des Alpes joint.

ski area myth busters - good or bad

...They should add another groomer or two to the mix. There is almost no one on the bumps of MJ. Chamonix, St. Anton, Ischgl can be a bit industrial - but I still like them. I had a friend with a house in Sundance - it was a unique place. I think you can avoid the worse by staying at...

ski area myth busters - good or bad

...Mary Jane, CO: Winter Park is a tale of two ski areas. The MJ side is really fun. Snowbird, UT: excellent terrain and snow but the industrial ambiance ain't for me and it's gotten worse as an Ikon joint. Sundance, UT: before going in 2005, I hadn't done my homework and wasn't expecting it...

I've been leaning a bit toward GVA solely based the sentiments everyone seems to have about Aosta/Monterosa...

I didn't even consider Salzburg/Amadé for many years because it's viewed as a mainstream "family" ski region...

Transferred over to a parallel road, which became some industrial work site, although fortunately the surface was very ridable. This led to what was probably the highlight of the tour: the improbably eclectic...
