Alps vs Western USA for young family

Thanks for this, this is very helpful. Interesting points on Presidents Week. It has been years since I have been anywhere other than Aspen where there are never any issues but I have just assumed that the usual spots just get slammed that week. But I suppose it might not be as bad as Christmas...

Alps vs Western USA for young family

I have been to Jackson each of the last four superbowl weekends and can attest to all of this. Apres Vous laps to start the morning are wonderful but are skid off quickly and are downright dangerous by the afternoon. They are steeper than your average blue groomed run and are definietly for more...

Alps vs Western USA for young family

Absolutely, I know what Im getting into, and am just calibrating whether in spite of all of that it beats the alternative--not going at all. This is more or less my only chance at Europe for the next few years. So its really just about mitigating these things to the best I can and hoping for the...

Alps vs Western USA for young family

I agree about St Moritz. Especially if I get hotel rooms at the Monopol where I stayed last time which was directly at the base of the corviglia furnicular. Austria/Italy possibly better bang for buck but I cant argue that it definitely could fit the bill.

Luckily I have been spoiled so have avoided east coast skiing all these years. It was useful for me growing up getting some extra days to learn, and will be useful for the kids in that capacity, but ever since I could work, pay and travel on my own I have gotten on a plane whenever I have the...

Alps vs Western USA for young family

Thanks all. Did not consider Munich as a gateway city but wow I see it's less than 2 hours from Kitz. That's a pretty easy connection and those flights like the Zurich/Milan flights are probably ~500 tops in winter. Seems easy enough to avoid Austria at Mardi Gras week, certainly for next...

Alps vs Western USA for young family

These forums have long been my source for all things Europe and I am hoping I might find some feedback in deciding where to ski next year (and subsequent years.) Some background–my wife does not ski (enjoys food, villages, apres, spa etc) and I have a 3 year old and a 2 year old. The 3 year old...

    Alps Trip Late January

What a coincidence we ate there last night! Some tripadvisor research led us there even though it was about a 15 minute walk over to St Moritz Bad. It was fantastic. Authentic food and great wine. Definitely a good recommendation. We splurged at Chez Veglia tonight which is an outpost of the...

    Alps Trip Late January

We arrived in Milan yesterday morning at 6 am and were on the lifts at Corviglia by 10:15. No travel hiccups and an easy transfer. We decided to stay at hotel monopol at the base of the corviglia funicular. The draw of staying in town ultimately swayed the decision. We are very happy...

Say no more, St. Moritz over Courmeyer, I agree with you. Thank you. I am not going to reserve anything today so maybe I will change my mind. Perhaps even reserve nothing and if our flight lands earlier than expected make a last minute decision to take on the extra driving to Dolimites. The...

    Alps Trip Late January

For those reasons I think the Monta Rosa areas are out. I land in Milan at 6 am Monday. The two options I am weighing most heavily are: 1. St. Moritz 2. Stay in Courmeyeur--do our first day on piste, hire a guide for the 2nd day, ski grand montets the 3rd day, and play the 4th day by ear...

And if worth it, could widen the drive radius to 3 hours which would add in St Moritz and Verbier as options as well. I will have the option of returning through Zurich but as of now am committed to arriving in Milan.

    Alps Trip Late January

now that some of my parameters are locked in I think the dolomites are too far. for 3.5 days of skiing I'd love to keep it under 2 hours driving from milan. based on my last few hours of research, champoluc/alagna or aosta/courmayeur seem like good options. I just cant get a sense for how they...

    Alps Trip Late January

I should add that we are down to just two of us. My cousin who is in to off piste dropped out so it is just me and my father. Which really means a lot of piste skiing or gentle easy access off piste. Given the lack of snow I would imagine most easily accesible off piste is long tracked out so...

    Alps Trip Late January

thanks. our plans have changed slightly. we now plan on leaving this sunday and it looks like our best option is a air Italy flight to milan that lands at around 630 am. we will need to leave on Friday. it seems like there are a few options closer to milan which make more sense given the tight...

    Alps Trip Late January

Thanks Tony. As we have been to Zermatt already we want to try something else. It seems like if off piste is not great given the lack of snowfall than this could be an ideal time for the Dolomites. From what I can gather, even with three weeks of no snowfall we can still probably get close to a...

    Alps Trip Late January

Given my window of the 18th-30th, I am beginning to get concerned by this massive blob of high pressure that has kept most of the alps sunny the past week and seemingly will for the foreseeable future. If this keeps up, I may need to shift gears from a trip focused on off piste to one focused on...

    Alps Trip Late January

Seems like it has been snowing and will continue in near future in a lot of areas so we will have options I think. Tony, re:Engleberg 1. Is all guiding including private guiding limited to the weekend or just group guiding? If 4 of us want to share the cost of a private guide I would have...

I am actually not a big United guy but I use Chase cards for my business which transfer to United at a 1 to 1 ratio and have plenty of those. It seems like even on the day of departure you can book one way flights to either geneva or zurich for 37.5k which while not great normally given the...

Tony, the photos from your Val trip are incredible. Outside of the extra drive time, are their downsides you see to that area based on my needs?
