    More Telluride Mismanagement

This is going to be a challenging one for people to keep track of. Its not like labor issues show up on the snow report or weather forecast. So far, other than Tellurides ongoing saga, I haven’t seen any sites predicting upcoming labor issues. However it could certainly destroy a ski trip...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Bring those rock skis. Base must be less than 12 inches.

    Crans-Montana, CH, Jan. 14, 2024

This is awful tragic event. However, if there was indeed only 1 exit, I agree, this seems like changes need to be made to the fire code regulations and retrofits required.

    Northern VT: what a start

I have read that Jay has very favourable orthographic lift similar to the cottonwood canyons.

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

Yes I can attest to this. I arrived on Dec 20, at that time I think they had 46 runs and no natural snow terrain due to rain the day before. Terrain progressively opened each day, including all natural snow terrain, and by Dec 23, they had more than 90 runs open. Forecast for tomorrow looks...

    More Telluride Mismanagement

I don't know much about Horning. Is he a self made businessman or someone who inherited a lot of money and is in the process of losing it all? This doesnt make any financial sense. However, I wonder if its about a precedent and perhaps all workers looking for a salary increase?

    More Telluride Mismanagement

I find it very surprising that ski areas are willing to forgo peak season. How may patrollers could Telluride have 100-200? We cant be talking about that much money in total. I think other labor cost would be much higher at the ski areas. I would imagine millions in lost revenue for...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

I recall encountering rain at Crested Butte about 10 years ago in mid February. I think it was relatively light and not typical of a eastern soaking winter rain.

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

I stumbled across this very detailed paper on snowmaking. It reviews all kinds of snowmaking systems, energy efficiency, etc. The focus is improving efficiency and energy consumption. There is a lot of discussion on automation and jow new technologies can reduce power consumption. The...

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

I met some Texans at Tremblant. I wonder if any from Colorado/Utah have decided to try the east this holiday season with such a good eastern start and such a poor western start?

    Mont Tremblant 2025-26 Season

Today, we woke up to clear blue skies, sun and about 6” of powder. Glades skied as good as anywhere with fresh snow. Minimal lines with the Edge having a 2-3 minute wait as this is the only sector that was entirely ungroomed and predominantly glades. Also a photo of snowmaking on Expo...

    Mont Tremblant 2025-26 Season

As I was driving back home today, I noticed all power lines running along the roads in the entire region look exactly the same with wooden poles as those on the ski area. Therefore they are likely Hydro-Quebec lines and not maintained by Altera.

    Mont Tremblant 2025-26 Season

They have these in a few areas. Likely for the power to support lifts, snowmaking, lodge, etc. i dont think the soil is solid rock in this area. Lots of natural snow terrain opened today. (Entire edge area). On opening it was all untracked of about 6” on top of a firm rain crust...

    Mont Tremblant 2025-26 Season

I am back at Tremblant. Its about 6 inch of light fluff on top of a firm base from the rain on Friday. Overall skiing is generally good. Today they got most of the glades and natural snow bump runs open. It was cold this morning at -20c. They started snowmaking on expo yesterday...

Challenges of Running An Independent NE Ski Area

The runs are so short. Therefore the majority of the skiers are not actually skiing at any given time. The hourly lift capacity is more important in determining the ski area carrying capacity. On a 2000+ vertical run, people are more willing to wait for a 10-15 min lift line. This isnt...

Challenges of Running An Independent NE Ski Area

Mount St Louis is a small 550' vertical family run area near me. https://mountstlouis.com/pdf/MSLM-Trail-Guide.pdf. I believe they have been owned by the same family since opening in the 60's. I am am always impressed how they manage to invest so heavily back into the mountain. They...

Challenges of Running An Independent NE Ski Area

You have nicely summarized why we are seeing the consolidation that has been happening over the last 10 years. Vail, Alterra, Boyne, Powder, all have diversified geographically to reduce annual risk. As highlighted this year, its rare for all geographic regions to have a bad year.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

I was planning to ski Red mtn on January 11, prior to Mustang. However its now looking more likely that I will stay further north and ski Lake Louise and Revelstoke. Fortunately, its all the same region, but looks like southern BC has been getting predominantly rain which seems so unusual.

    Ski Lift Accidents in 2024/25

I dont understand whats going on at RCR. They seem unable to maintain their skis lifts. The provincial regulator has closed 4 lifts at Mont St Anne due to maintenance issues. I think this is functionally the majority of the mountain...

    Monitoring Cardiac Health

Primary indication for blood thinners after stents is to prevent a blood clot from forming in the stents and creating another heart attack. Once the stents become coated by endothelium (lining of blood vessels), the potent blood thinners are generally stopped and changed to a medication such...
