Mustang Powder Snowcat, Jan. 17-20, 2012

Wow, looked like a great time. My only comparison is Monashee Powder Cats last February (highly recommend). I'd say Mustang easily has more impressive terrain, notably alpine. Can't go wrong with Monashee trees at either operation. We remarkably got over 20k on our last day; helped being our...

    Crested Butte: Snodgrass Mountain Expansion

the area where the Crested Butte owners want ski lifts would be on old slide zones, so i guess there is concern about ski lift stability on the immediate underlying bedrock and/or future slides. i only read the abstract and introduction, but looks like an interesting read...for geologists at...

    Mt. Baldy 3/22/08

Nice to see what I missed last week. Too bad the wind kept the lifts shut down last Monday morning.

    How's Baldy?

I'm going to be in the Riverside area on business next week and will not be bringing my gear. Any recommendations on ski rentals? I would like some advanced skis, and am not confident in the ski resort's selection. I'm leaning towards Baldy now, but may end up at Mtn High since they have a 4hr...

    North Carolina ski season opens

Thats what 5000 feet of elevation will do for ya....and a small vertical. I happen to be going to the NC highcountry this weekend, so I'm going to try to hit the slopes if they're still open. The earliest I've skied in NC was Nov. 15 2003, so this is the earliest opening date I can remember. 8)

Gone into Powder Mode- This is gonna be unfrigginreal

Yeah, I'm in DC metro as well. I got tommorow off work early last week when this storm starting showing up in the long range models. I don't want to drive any further than to Blue Knob, PA. Unfortunately, there might be a layer of ice on top of our powder down in central PA. Enjoy the crust...

    checking in from the southeast

i didn't intend to compare them to killington by size, but by the fact that sugar is usually always the first to open. also, like woodbury, few people care that cataloochee is open

    checking in from the southeast

well, the ski season has begun in north carolina earlier than usual this year. the mountains have been making snow since wednesday afternoon. one small ski area actually is open today beating out the 'bigger' resorts. its our equivalent of woodbury beating out killington to open first a few...

Airplane Gully & East Snowfields 6/4-5/2005

About how much vertical is available on the east snowfields now? Any guesses on how long into the summer that'll be skiable?

    Wolf Creek, CO 3/14 - 3/16

First time to Wolf Creek, second time skiing out West. What a great mountain - wide open terrain with endless tree lines. You can ski anywhere you want, the mountain is so wide, but you can sample all the good terrain in a few days. The snow was packed powder and spring-like on the lower...

    NC backcountry

If you're in Hendersonville again sometime, try Wolf Laurel just north of Asheville. Its smaller than Sugar, but has more character. When everything is open, its the best in NC. Both Wolf and Sugar have blacks in the 30-35 degree range. But yeah, Sugar is your best bet with snow/terrain...

    NC backcountry

A rare occasion, but this past storm allowed for it with a wet snow base and dry snow cover and good wind-loading. Drove up to a gap at 4400' and hiked up close to 5000' and skied down. Bushwacking in some areas, but in the open areas you could link some turns on the windslab and occasional...

    Widespread Major Winter Storm Forecast

It'll snow in the NC mountains too; backlash snows don't stop in West Virginia. I know you probably know that, but it seems everyone always overlooks us. We already have about 8 inches from this storm.

    10/6 Abasin

ah, but just wait till even May to enjoy A-basin, when everyone else is closed. those little 3 inch storms kept it nice into late May this past year. no glacial ice or slush like the East, just corn or soft powder
