So you're disqualifying Admin's one-and-out on rock-hard refrozen at Alta last weekend?
](*,) ](*,) ](*,) I never said "don't count" or "disqualify." By vertical it's probably 15% of an average admin day at Alta or 10% of a good day. Is there something unreasonable about that?

The earn-turns people like icelantic are an exception. His earned 10K on April 1 is an impressive achievement.
Earned turn days are apples and oranges vs. lift service days IMHO.

If people want to use time as a measure of skiing, hours would be better than days.

In response to the two lines above that I bolded, yes to the first, and no to the second.
The only metric that matters is whatever metric(s) one chooses for themselves. Anyone applying their own metrics upon someone else is immaterial and pointless, unless they see themselves as some kind of arbiter of measurement or feels some need to do so.

keeping track of vertical is insane. that's like counting how many steps you take in any given day..

Im at 112 so far this season, with a goal of 150.

91 Mammoth Mountain
18 June Mountain
1 Kirkwood
1 Alpine Meadows
1 Squaw Valley

TonyC, I assume you will be up in mammoth before the season is over, we should take some turns together next time you are up here.

I don't know. I don't care. Any metrics or counts have pretty much ceased to have meaning. The Wasatch is my backyard. I go skiing when I want...I have fun....I go home if it's not fun or the end of the day or I'm out of energy.
It's rather liberating.

We've had this conversation before. Several times. We've heard all the arguments for and against. Post your days if you want -- not Excel sheets of vertical feet, powder-enhanced vertical feet, or number of trips to the loo. Likewise for other threads are comments that you'll let us know in June, or that you're only now starting your spring season, or about reaching some Zen stage where you've freed yourself from the oppressive shackles of metrics.

For those who care, here are our counts for the previous three seasons: 2008-09 , 2007-08, and 2006-07.

Q, are you working a Discovery season pass? I remember you mentioning something about that last season. I assume that Montana is a personal favorite region of yours.

Q, I'm just shocked that you didn't get any turns in your home country this season. It was what, the best season in several decades in Scotland?

I love Montana for a variety of reasons, the skiing is good IMO particularly the backside of Discovery but I have friends that I stay with for beer money for as long as I want each winter in Philipsburg which is 13 miles from Disco. I bought a $239 seasons pass which is valid from March 1st this year thru 2010-2011. 7 days this season paid for it. Its probably a dirty trick but I wont renew next winter instead do the same in March 2012. Also got a $5 discount at Pow Mow.

it is probably indefensible Admin but, I dont have time off midweek with a 4 week trip to the USA each winter and I refuse to ski weekends in Scotland. I am probably wrong but past experience of queing 30 mins for a 2 minute run as a youngster has put me off.

My skis and boots are sitting in Philipsburg Montana now so less chance. The mountains hit another 2-3" of fresh today and a friend says Cairngorm was great up top.

I started skiing in 1986 I think in Scotland and that as far as I am concerned from pictures and reports is still the best in my living skiing memoy. I skied at the Lecht(lowest resort) until the 2nd weekend in May and did not realise there were snow fenses between runs until the following season.

Gas aint so cheap here either!!

Next year I'd love to ski with some of you guys at Alta.

I defer to your obviously superior knowledge of the precise rules regarding discourse in specific threads.
Sounds like Sour Orange NJ moderatorwannabeitis.

Good to see that your mates in the U.S. haven't turned you against your Scottish roots.

So other than your month in the States, you don't ski elsewhere?

I can relate. 1978-79 remains the best season in Southern California in my records, and it was by skiing one day every week that season that I was able to improve substantially. 16 of my 30 days that year were in SoCal. The last 14 years I've averaged slightly less than 4 local days/season, though that rates to go up when I'm retired and will be less demanding in criteria (1+ foot new over 4+ foot base) to ski midweek.

And who appointed you arbiter of thread content? Look at the prior year threads and you'll see that most posters view it as the "season recap" thread and include whatever other info they consider most pertinent. There were a few debates on those threads, but sensitivity seems excessive this time.

comments that you'll let us know in June, or that you're only now starting your spring season
And if these comments bother you so much, maybe you shouldn't start this thread so frickin' early. Many ski resorts have to close up shop prematurely because of the misplaced public mentality that ski season must be over because at home the flowers are blooming or the golf course opened, etc.

IMO, that's where you want to be.

I like counting my days. But I'll bet that if I had unlimited access to skiing like you do, I wouldn't do it.

I've written a TR for everyday that I've skied the last three years.

I do it, because those days are precious, and I want to be able to remember them over the summer and in old (ok older) age.

If I skied most of the year and was hitting 100 days ... I probably wouldn't count.

It wouldn't be skiing and blogging. It would just be life.

You got it good brotha.

If my input on this site is this undervalued, maybe it's time for me to ski off into the sunset.

This is a bittersweet ending to my relationship with this forum. I always enjoyed contributing to it, but am getting less tolerant of a few bullying voices and the hurtful things they say.

I'd like to thank Admin for providing this sandbox and for giving me the opportunity to contribute my opinions and photos over the years.

I'm not going to lie. I came home saturday night late from a night on the town and saw:

I wrote something though opted not to post because I was not as sober as possible, but it went along the lines of: "Man that is some hippy bs." Now I understand Marc_C's attitude, but this thread is about the amount of days you hit, hence the title 2009-10 Ski-Day Totals. Again, this thread is about your ski day totals. If you are too good to count your totals great, but it's fairly useless to tell everyone so.

OK, I'm back.

Classic...in the same class as that 80k/day, that tilted TR on Main Chute and Eastern Spring snow will stop you dead in your tracks debate where one California poster gets ganged on by at least 10 regulars.

In my books, James can post whatever he wants as long as he continued posting pictures from beautiful girls. I really hope you make it down to Argentina one year. 8-[ Seriously, he started the topic over the past 3 years (like I started the Eastern Closing thread), he setting the table, so he can set the rules.

Well, Admin can tell us what the traffic is on his site now versus November. Regardless of warp sense of priorities, some people have had enough of skiing by the end of March, no matter the conditions. Lucky Luke was on Mt Washington on Saturday and is skiing today at Sunday River...so there are few that are still skiing for sure. I'm looking into maybe getting a second day in April (by far my worst April since the early 90s, since I was in University).

Hence Saturday's crowding at Alta at 11 a.m. Saturday in nearly perfect spring weather:

Here's example 2, the parking lot at 3 p.m.:

"They should keep Alta open until the snow's gone!" I bet that a lot of ski areas would like to have that many cars in it on spring days.

I think Admin said that no precise figures were available, but I've always wanted to know Snowbird or Mammoth's revenues vs. expenses when they stay open through late spring/early summer.
