well, well, well, what a ride it's been-so far.
kinda tough to believe any weather reports this week so, had to trust my gut and my gut was good to me.
tues morning 5:15 am leave newmarket for a 3 hour white knuckler to wildcat. pulled in at 8:15 to 6 inches of fresh and comin down hard. chose the kitty cuz they've been gettin lot's of snow lately and no rain that many other spots have been gettin. get on 1st chair with only 4 other people waiting and not a soul in sight. i won't bore you with details of the ski conditions but, i will say that 2100 vert of no tracks crossed on open slopes with 8 inches of the finest spongecake on a soft base for the 1st few hours
before having to get even a bit creative was pretty deluxe. very quiet day at the cat with folks saying, "where is every one?" i replied "they'll be here tomorrow for 2 for 1 and i won't be".
leave the cat at 5pm after beers and head to the valley for a computer and noaa check. call a buddy at burke who said they got only 3 inches and some drizzle but the skiing rocked and the cover was amazing, the cat had 8" and all snow so i knew i'd made a good call. messed around
all obsessive like and saw that north cental and ne vermont looked a bit colder with good snowfall potential for wed so, off i go to burke. nice to run a ski shop so i can ski free everywhere, ok 10 bucks at some spots.
pull into burke, snuggle into my bag in the wagon with girlfriend and dog-who needs a room. and wake up at 6 to PUKEFEST! two inches overnight with 8" total. 1st chair again, blah, blah.
i think i had a "COUNTRY CLUB" ski experience that admin mentioned to me once about alta when the resort opens and the road is closed.
the only differences were that the road wasn't closed, schools were in session thank god, it ain't alta, and i mean this is burke man! at the busiest time of day i counted 19 cars in the whole parking lot and 1 was mine and 3 were employees, get the picture? everything skied very well and i could still see mine and my girls tracks under the chair on an open slope unbothered or scribbled on at 3:30 pm. lines were filled in that i haven't been able to ski in years, not even last year.
crappy drive home tonight, but switched work shift tomorrow for 2 pm so will hit gunstock from 9-1 with you guessed it, up to 8 more inches expected.
gonna be a great weekend for the workin folk.

ya gaperdog i mean ski dog, i was in utah for 10 days through last week so i know 1st hand what you got out there.
only thing different here is that i've gotten to share it with far less folks out here the past 3 days at the resorts than sharing it with jet setters from all over joeyland u.s.a and what can i say, it's just better in a whole different kinda way. 17 runs at gunstock this morning with 8" on a soft base and never crossed another track till i left at noon for work. my motto for the day was, "cross a track, if even my own, i'm goin home." i said that to a 70+ ski club member and he said "boy are you fussy!" i love that.
enjoy the skiing this week my new england family, WINTER #2 IS IN FACT-FULL EFFECT.

Crowds I agree with you are a bit large sometimes, but as you know..if you know WHERE to go at alta you can avoid this issue...

Now....you may be sharing with less folks but it aint the same terrain or snow...not by a longshot...this you too obviously know first hand...

EDIT:
Why start with name calling right out of the gate?

Dude, you might as well walk around Alta with a sandwich board that says, "LOOK AT ME!! I JUST MOVED HERE FROM THE EAST COAST!!!"

You act as if no one on FTO had ever thought of packing up and moving out there. Icelantic moved to Utah 13 years before you, and I moved to Colorado 13 years before him, and lots of others, I assume. It ain't an original idea.

Here's a thought: instead of spewing bile over here, how about posting some stoke in the western forum?

Um... back on topic.... I am going tomorrow!! Its snowin, and I'm goin' too!!!!

:D

I ski a lot of powder days and don't get too worked up, but my heart is pumping a little harder right now in anticipation. Northern New England has been nuked pretty good this week and its just going to keep on going for a few days, sweet!

Less smoke, more stoke!!!

Do you read the western forum? I ski with Admins group. I am in many of the vids and pics....why would I double post??? That would be silly...so please go read a bit more carefully over there.

I know it no original idea..I lived in boulder in the early nineties. This isnt new for me either....ive lived and/or been making trips out here for the last 15 or more years, im no "newbie" or "gaper" to the west.

I do know I dont miss the east coast "attitude", too defensive, im not directing this at the east OR you (or Iceman for that matter), my hearts still there im just throwing a little back is all...either buck up and take it or you can contiune to "cry" about it. In the long run you know nothing about me...but you insist on making personal attacks. None of what I said was personal...like mentioned about me on another board it shows a lot about your character when you make personal attacks.

I was merely commenting on how Iceman was making noise about "utah who" in his OP. Its really all good natured ribbing and has been going on with Iceman, Marc_c, Admin, trilopeter, and the lot of Utah East coast transplants.

Trust me i know East coast conditions...I been skiing in the east for nearly 30 years.I finally got sick of the variable conditions and the typical January thaw and packed up, that was that. I've owned a home in Killington for many years. BEEN THERE DONE THAT!

Im not going to drag this crap over here though...I like this board too much to make it "noisy"....

Again this was good natured ribbing, started (in this thread) by Iceman...thats really all it is...

Good stuff Riv....i am honestly glad you guys are getting it again...you had a great early season and as we all know it usually comes back like a LION in Feb/March......

Before I left I had been resigning myself to the fact that the typical "great" new england skiing didnt even start until end of January...you had to get the goods when the goods were there to get...

We all love being out there doing what we love....sliding ourselves on snow in some fashion...

But we can still have fun messing with each other right?? ;-)

Anytime you're ready im sure you have more than one spot to stay here in Ooootah. :D

Now go GIT SOME!

M

skidog, you may have taken "utah who?" a tad differently than i meant it. what i meant was that the skiing has been so good here the past few days that i'm not thinking much of the skiing i did in utah. "gaperdog" was harsh and i apologize for calling you that especially cuz i don't know you or tirolerpeter and i shouldn't be name calling in the first place. it was just so nice to go from 9 pow days in a row out there to well, tomorrow will be 4 in a row here.
if anyone is in the gilford area tomorrow a.m. i'll be at gunstock cuz it's close to work and the best conditions compared to the kitty or burke from my past 3 days experience. the terrain may be a bit lacking but, icelantic always puts snow quality and underfoot feel 1st.
the mountain is my canvas, one which i can portray my thoughts and feelings through my feet to the white gift that we've been given.
let's ride

Hey then just stop. :o

Great advice Harvey44. Now please re-direct your comments toward your local lower case bard who seems unable to focus on snow and terrain and and constantly wanders off into childish, or even snide characterizations of people and places he holds in contempt.

Let's get back to discussions of conditions and terrain that we get to enjoy wherever it may be. Expressions of joy over finding excellent snow conditions is not gloating. Written expressions of enthusiasm are literary equivalents of verbal "Wahoos!" Reports of poor conditions should not be viewed as criticism but rather, as important information useful to people considering long and expensive trips. Some of us have gone west because our experiences over time convinced us that we would consistently find conditions that we liked, and our life situations made such a move possible. Skiing in the east can be terrific and because a number of us who enjoyed skiing there for years wanted to maximize our access to consistently good skiing does not mean that we hold eastern skiing in contempt. After all, we have many friends who live there and whom we wish continued good skiing. Let's focus on the snow.

While I for one have something to say. 15 inches and counting at Killington!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAHOO!!!!!! The Catskills unfortunately are getting ZIP. Which means I just have to go farther to get the goods.

:D Exactly...make an effort however large or small. All I have
to say is anytime when mountains in the NE area are 100% open
such as, lets say Smuggs for example, get up there! Like me
this weekend both days all day!!!!! Was finding 1-2'+ everywhere
yesterday morning...and the forecast looks great!

I skied w Gaperdog this week.

"LOOK AT ME!! I JUST MOVED HERE FROM THE EAST COAST!!!" is written on his forehead.
