Alta 4/10 Day 59

I took Marc_C's advice and got my butt up to Alta this morning. Even though I didn't hit the lift until 10 AM, it didn't matter. The 14"+ that fell overnight wasn't even dented by the few "earlybirds" that had come out. I skied fresh tracks off every lift with barely a traverse needed. There were only a few scattered fluffy clouds floating in an otherwise blue sky. Every lift was literally ski on until I had to leave for a 2 PM visit to my dentist. Woohoo!

From these reports, it seems like if you really wanted to do the snow chaser thing, april in utah might be worth it. Watch the weather, fly in, and ski untracked from bell to bell.

Snowbird's spring lift schedule.)

In response to rfarren's question, there is a substantial subculture of early/semi-retirees from both coasts who spend at least one week per month in ski season in Utah. I ran into a few of these who were friends of the Chatter Creek snowcat skiers who live in Utah. I skied a couple of mornings with these groups while at the Iron Blosam March 11-12. Most of them were coming back for at least one week in April.

bob D and I were over at the bird most of the day.

did a few runs with Dale first thing in the morning. Did a run over by tombstone, then over in surgaloaf down extrovert. Got to top of sugarloaf with hopes of heading through the "taliban checkpoint" and it was CLOSED!!!

Decided to head down to wildcat and see if the keyhole was open and if not we'd drop somewhere in the rope line to get to snowbird. Keyhole was open..and let me tell you probably the best keyhole run of the season. Only patrol tracks then bob and myself :D

did a BUNCH of runs at the bird with bob and since I have no clue i can't tell you what they were, but all were DEEP....then a quick run through armpit gate back into Alta and a full tombstone. Way to end the day.

Had to pick up wife and go to first dr visit for the baby, and heard the heartbeat!!!! :D

Im hoping for more powder days, but im not taking work off for any more of them. If they happen to fall on a weekend so be it, otherwise it was a terrific powder year!!!!!

I made it out for february and march this year. Next year I will do Jan or Dec, Feb, and mar. April with my schedule isn't realistic. I suppose I could cancel work last second if the deal was good enough, but that is less than likely given the rising costs of gas and subsequently airfare.
