'Twas the day before Christmas, and from our gear rooms
Stuff was being gathered for our ski costumes.
The ski socks were placed next to ski boots with care,
In hopes that some fresh lines still would be there.
The Kid was rustled from snug in his bed,
As visions of face-shots danced in his head.
We bid mamma goodbye, as I in my cap,
Headed to Alta, and clicked my helmet's chin strap.
The liftline was short as Collins did clatter,
Marc_C, Bob and I filled the lift ride with chatter.
Away to the top we flew like a flash,
As we thought about where we'd find a powder stash.
The bright sun glistening on the new-fallen snow
Gave the spectre of great lines on objects below.
But, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But 4 inches of fresh, maybe five for our cheer.
With a couple of short turns, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment the snow would be sick!
More rapid than moguls the traverse bumps they came,
And we whistled, and shouted as towards fresh snow we aimed!
"Now Backside! now, Greeley! now, Wildcat and High T!
On, Supreme! On, Sugarloaf! on, Mambo and Main Street!
To the top of the mountain! Take care not to fall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Fresh turns for all!"
Through ankle-deep fresh snow our skis they did fly,
All of it bathed under sunny blue sky.
So up to the mountain-top on high-speeds we flew,
With a surprise snowfall to greet us, and untracked lines, too.
The snowfall was twinkling, the temps were ideal,
The hard bumps beneath the new snow did conceal.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down Greeley Hill Brad came with a bound.
He was dressed all in soft shell, with a smile ear to ear,
And passed right by me and toward Sunnyside did steer.
Time for another run, up toward Supreme,
This new snow was a present, his surprise Christmas dream.
Bob's eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cold cheeks were rosy, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And he bragged of the quality of our surprise layer of snow.
The stump of a tree Marc rounded with ease,
And the cold smoke billowed around both his knees.
With a broad smile he laughed about our good luck,
As friends in New England were skiing manmade muck.
Pat was smiling and gleeful, enjoying the snow, too,
For she also expected just refrozen glue.
But this storm unexpected, got her out of bed,
To hop in her car towards Alta to head.
She spoke just few words, and went straight to her work,
Of skiing across the mountain, her face in a smirk.
And across the Germ Traverse, as the wind it did blow,
She knew on the other side we'd find untracked snow.
We returned to our cars, to prepare for the night,
As lights on our Christmas trees would shine clean and bright.
But we called to each other, as we drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
