Days 12-13: What a weekend!

20131207_100910.jpg

We knew that the forecast was for cold, so after sushi on Friday night AmyZ came over and we hot waxed with the coldest formula I had.

That turned out to be a good thing, for we each had plenty of glide on Saturday when temperatures reached a high of about 8 dF, which was our big warm-up this week. It started snowing before opening and kept snowing throughout the day. Alta reported 4" of new by closing and that seemed about right for most places other than Catherine's Area, the usual jackpot winner at Alta, where I'd swear that it was around 6". Combine that with the fact that Supreme didn't even start running for the season until Friday and it felt extraordinarily deep and untracked out there.

We arrived on Sunday to another 5-6" of new snow overnight and between 15-20 fewer Fahrenheit degrees on the thermometer. The highest I saw all day at the top was -8 dF. While Saturday was deserted, people showed up in droves today although with that much terrain open we barely stood in a line all day.

Our posse grew exponentially, too, to include not only those who were out on Saturday but also jojo_obrien (he does in fact exist!), Skidog, TheOtherAmy, Corey, Sam, Tiny Tim and Soo. Yes, that makes 11, which is really too large a crowd to contain. That proved itself when we lost Tiny Tim and Soo on the second run, Sam on the third, and jojo_obrien at lunchtime.

That crystal-filled sky that always seems to materialize when it's uber-cold hung tight over the mountain today, revealing sun dogs and some unusual light.

They even let us have the High T today once they finished a protracted round of a.m. bombing, although I'm glad that we caught it early. It was very boney when we went thorugh; I would've hated to have seen it later on in the day, but that run on Thirds was certainly worth the effort that it took to get there.

The biggest hangup today was the cold, but not for the reasons you'd think. I was actually comfortably warm all day, and the only time we went inside at all was for an early lunch at Alf's while we waited for ASP to finish making Catherine's Area safe for us. Rather, it made the snow so damned slow. My cold snow wax didn't help. In untracked, you felt like you were skiing with the parking brake left on. On the groomed, places where you'd normally glide turned into a walk. Getting out of a few key locations turned into a real schlep. It was exhausting, and in combination with beating myself silly on Saturday I called it a day at 1:15 p.m. today.

i think admin's beard says it all.............................

after the group broke for an early lunch ](*,) IMO..........I wanted to take a quick lap...turns out Catherine's just opened up ..........

I proceeded to lap that sh*t 5 to 6 times until i was silly exhausted from the initial hike and traverse.......it was quite good......... i ate some peanuts and a granola bar, too amped to stop for cocoa and a sandwich......

Took a cocoa break at 2 pm and enjoyed chatted w/ some ski bunnies out visiting from the east coast...... skiied a few runs with them until taking a few more laps on Collins. Back at the car at 3:00 PM.

Sucking down some Epic Pale ale...........and toasting a very good weekend thanks to Alta ..........finally a chance to meet the legendary admin........

Legendary? Be careful, my head still needs to fit through that sliding door to enter GMD.

Great to meet you as well! Looking forward to sharing many more turns this winter.

No one who knows him calls him legendary - you'll learn soon enough, grasshopper. Oh, in that pic jojo took, that's not ice, that's the actual color of his beard. 8)

No dye here at all. And that's why I got rid of the beard a number of years ago - it started going very grey.

Did I actually say otherwise? Gee, I don't think that I did...You must be just a little sensitive on that point.

and now the hairs almost gone from the both of ya !!!!!!!

And that's an accusation I would clearly not make. While I've got the rather prominent flesh-colored Yarmulke thing going on (I don't own a hand-held mirror, so pictures taken of me from behind still frighten me), Marc_C still has a full head of hair despite his far more advanced age.

If you listen to Tony Crocker at all...

THERE'S NO REASON FOR EARLY SEASON @myAltaUT !!!!1 :stir:

I know exactly where that is! I assume everyone in the party was beeping and had recovery gear?

I did, but I had already left at that point.

good luck getting anything in that picture off to the sides of that picture or anything above us for a thousand vertical to move , that slope was just steep enough to ski - never mind above us even getting to the spot where the picture was taken from . that faces due southwest - any snow that was on that face before this or the last storm cycle started was cooked almost to the point of no snow on that entire shoulder - please :dead horse:

If it's the spot I'm thinking of, it faces W or even a bit WNW - I may be wrong on either aspect or if I'm thinking of the same shot.

...any snow that was on that face before this or the last storm cycle started was cooked almost to the point of no snow on that entire shoulder...

Which would cause one to suspect a layer of facets at near ground level - a perfect failure layer.

The victim writes about it:
http://amieski.com/2013/12/12/blind-spot/

In that blog entry she writes:
I learned that zone at the base of Grizzly Gulch is a place where many people go on dangerous days to shoot, and is often thought of as a safe zone.

We talked very briefly about the snow and safety at the top. Checking the area, we didn’t see any visible signs of instability or recent activity, and it was mentioned that the slope had been skied recently.

Yes, different aspect and elevation, a natural terrain trap, etc.......but backcountry is backcountry, even if you're in sight of the boundary rope or have 50 years of B/C experience.
