Day 67: Oh my God, what a weekend!

This weekend will be one that I'll remember throughout the dog days of summer. After yesterday's untracked powder-fest, today delivered even more of the same, only this time under bluebird skies, and as hard as it was to believe, shared with even fewer people.

We caught the Baldy Shoulder opening.

We also caught the Backside opening from High Notch, which itself is about as benign as I've ever seen it. Filled with deep, loose, soft snow, mere mortals like yours truly can actually ski through High Notch instead of sideslipping it. That hike, however, still beats me up mercilessly every time.

Honestly, we couldn't find a bad run today. Every aspect, every elevation held either untracked powder or dry, cold, chalky, loose soft snow with no base to be felt at all. Zero crunch, nothing but plush. We couldn't go wrong if we tried to.

West Rustler, in particular was absolutely unbelievable. Cold, dry snow was being shaved off into sluff by everyone skiing it. Pool table smooth, the snow had so much resistance to it that you could lay into arcs so deep that your uphill hand was practically touching the snow on each turn.

They even surprised us with another unplanned opening of Wildcat for a couple of hours at mid-day, where the entrance to Waterfall was completely rock-free and barely tracked, something that seldom occurs during even the deepest of winters. Bumps were virtually non-existent.

It took until 2 p.m. for snow at lower elevations to even start getting heavier, but by that point my legs were toast.

This late season has vastly exceeded any expectations we may have had (and exceeded those from much of this winter as well!).

74 inches at Alta this April: above average but far from exceptional. Yes you locals were lucky to have the weekend set up like this. But those empty powder slopes are a testimony to the stupidity of the skiing populace, the same people who will be standing in line to ski the WROD in November.

Gotta love April skiing!!!

day 75-- to get right to the matter at hand - where was the really good skiing today ? it was everywhere any aspect -elevation (at alta) and any pitch (actually the steeper the better ). wildcat was sweet , nice of alta to fireup wildcat lift instead of making us cut in a traverse across baldy shoulder . but the really really good skiing was on west rustler today !!!

the high traverse is in the best condition it's been all season .

after admin split corey , the other amy , tele jon , amyz and i skied a combination run of santa clause chute as low as tower ten traverse out that to lone pine , which faces slightly more north to the base area with incredible snow. WAY BEYOND EXPECTATIONS

the snow was smoother than one could imagine !

a person could turn an edge into this turn after turn with no consistency issues what so ever !
IMG_0151.JPG
upper main chute is just now this late in the season filling the upper end enough to bury the cliff band on skiers left .

No doubt assisted by Alta being closed Monday-Thursday and hardly anyone there this weekend.

Not up to usual April standards, as noted by my report last week. Nonetheless Mammoth will likely have as much or more lift served May skiing available than LCC. May in the Main Lodge area should be fairly normal with the decent snowpack. The Canyon side (Sunday was the last day there) of Mammoth was what deteriorated prematurely with the dry weather since Jan. 1.

Snowbird will go to weekend only operation May 13. I would be surprised if it runs any later than Mammoth (Memorial weekend) despite the much better late season in 2012-13.
