Day 74: Better than dust on crust.

I'm a bit late getting this one out, it's been a hellish week. Q flew halfway around the world from Scotland and put hundreds of miles on a rental car just to get here. The least I could do is drive up and meet him for a few runs.

The temperatures dropped overnight and a few inches fell upon the newly solidified base. I therefore didn't place high expectations upon the snow conditions. When you do that, however, you're often pleasantly surprised.

It was all about low angle. We caught the Ballroom opening on first run, and as long as you took lower-angle routes you didn't punch through to the base and it actually skied surprisingly well - thick, creamy and consistent. On steeper stuff you'd feel the base, but the new snow provided enough of a cushion to make it tolerable. And there was absolutely no one there -- we were able to board one of the many empty chairs coming up Collins into the angle station for our second helping.

Other low angle spots like Greeley Bowl skied just as well. One lift rider, a regular at Mt. Hood with a cabin there and a daughter on the race team, wouldn't stop beaming on the chairlift, proclaiming Wednesday to have the best snow that he's skied all season. I had a bit more jaded perspective, but again I was surprised at how decent the skiing was on Wednesday.

With heavy rain as I stepped out of Brewvies at 9pm to phone Admin things were looking good for our 9am meet at Alta, amazingly for all my time spent in Utah over the last 8 years or so this would be only my 2nd day there and with someone who knew it well. I was looking forward to it.

Up early I headed to Alta and was the 5th car in the front row at 8.15 so I got my gear on and wandered around until the ticket office opened. It really was a beautiful spring morning with clear blue skies. Admin arrived in his unmistakable yellow and lime green jacket and we headed straight up Collins and managed to get some great first tracks on low angle powder. We even managed to get a lap in from the mid loading station as it was so quiet.

Our tracks - it was crowded like Scotland.

Admin gave me a good introduction to the mountain in the 2 hours or so that he skied before he headed to work and I got the bar opened at 11.30am for a quick Cutthroat as he changed.

Back out I headed up the Wildcat double and found fresh tracks in creamy powder on Johnson's Warmup catching the mid-loading of Collins and then headed for several laps into what I guess was Cecret Saddle. Next up I rode Sugarloaf and decided to follow a patroller and several guys on the climb over to East Greeley from the top of the Collins lift. It was hot now and this was definately building a thirst for my nightly apres ski beer.

Hiking the ridge.

I decided to drop in short of the summit and found some pretty nice turns in the afternoon untracked whipped cream. I skied to the Cecret lift in order to get over to Supreme and put in a couple of laps here including a hike that took me to some nice powder in a small chute after hiking out into Cathrines.

I finished my day with a flying run down to the Albion base and the Transfer Tow home and two beers in the lodge while watching the massuse do her stuff.

A lovely day, a great guided tour. A big thanks to Admin.
