Day 76: Spring corn perfection

Bobby Danger on Yellow Trail

It doesn't get much better than that! They let us have Backside this morning for the first time in weeks. For two runs, anyway, as they quickly re-closed it out of fear of the effects of daytime heating. And heat it did! By the time I left at noon temperatures were pushing 60 degrees and it was quickly turning to muck.

But before it did we bagged numerous runs of glorious untracked corn.

Morning coffee at Baldy Brews - shade was a good thing!

Greeley Bowl was fabulous, but grinding out the High T to get there at around 10 a.m. was a bone-rattling, nerve-wracking experience!

There's still a 104-inch base for tomorrow's closing day, and we couldn't help but compare our morning with mrgskier's on the Spring Fling white ribbon at Sugarbush along with our other Vermonter friends!

DAY..74.. CORNFECTION... those first two runs of the day were out of this world in QUALITY . it really only gets that smmmmmooooootttttthhhhhh in the back country , but today alta threw us some PRIME acreage , and really did the smart thing in my op. , by closing backside and yellow trail early , there won't be any deeeeppppp ruts to deal with from the get go in the a.m. . what i was suprised with though was how close to the surface last weekends cold winter snow was. over the span of 6 days the sun had at least on yellow trail cooked maybe a two inch layer of corn on the surface , with cold winter snow just under that . so this being true , with yellow trail and backsides alignment to the early morning sun , it would be preferable i.m.o. to be on that stuff 20 to 30 min. earlier. when we arrived at collins summit for the third lap i beleive we had just missed the closing . going out high-t traverse was actually easier to look for some tracks that were put down late yesterday , that were now frozen and get in them and let your skis track out , cause trying to hold an edge on that stuff was almost impossible and denture rattling ripples frozen solid . GREELY hill skied perfect. skied a west rustler about 12:45 with amyz and rdwore perfect at this time only problem was the lower half of west rustler was gone to the sticky side , again the cold snow was still close to the surface making the snow unpredictable in consistency of pace . tom. morning should be nice!!

Yup...shore would be nice to be out in Oz to enjoy the corn fest! We get soggy corn mixed with mud for our last day today. Can't complain....will be 113 daze this year, a new record.

Unfortunately, day 113 was spent skiing in the rain. To add insult to injury, the power went out for two hours at Sugarbush due to a fallen tree at the substation down the road (sparks, fire, etc!). We skied a couple of hours, then the power went out again! Only 1/2 hour the 2nd time at 4 - 4:30pm. We did get 3 runs 4:30 - 5pm....and likely were among the 20 or so folks who hung on for the final final final lift served in northern Vermont this year.

Kudos to Sugarbush for soldiering on! MRG would have put its tail between its legs. whimpered and closed after the first power outage (like they did on April 13 when they closed at 9am on their last planned day).

Looking forward to a full report on Alta's final final day!
