Alyeska?

Hi Guys,

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever been to Alyeska?

We are looking into spring break trips for my college club. We've gotten some rockin pricing to Alyeksa, and wanted to know any first hand experiences. I've been there in the summer time, but never for winter skiing...

Wouldn't airfare negate that rockin' pricing? And besides, getting there from the Northeast...

Um, airfare is about 400, as is the week long skiing package for the group with transfers, lodging, tickets, etc... 800 for a week of skiing in Alaska isn't to shabby I would say.

If you've got other suggestions in the 800 range I'd be glad to take them!

PS The flight is about 4 hours there, when you factor in time zone changes, and then its a red eye back... Doesn't really bother me in all honesty. You don't lose a day of skiing either way.

I've done Alyeaska in mid March.

Took my brother. Because he was un-married and the best skier I know. Got rid of my Alaska Airlines miles from Seattle.

I stayed at the Princess? Hotel. Reasonable. But super nice. It was about $100/night with 2 ski passes included everyday.

The skiing was good. Not super special. The tram side was quite good. But not worth 3+ days.

However, I was there for one day of heli-skiing. That was the goal. Chugach.

This made it worthwhile.

I will be there next March 22-27 for the first time in ski season. Chugach Powder Guides reserved for 24-25, standby for other days.

Alyeska itself I've heard same as Chris: good for 2-3 days, not necessarily for a week.

The $400 airfare from the East sounds good to me. Mine will be more than that but I have some coupons to apply from last year's snafus getting to/from Kamloops.

If you can get to Alaska for $400, maybe you should go. If I was not doing the miles thing....airfares from Seattle or Denver were almost $300 or $600 respectively. And this was '02 when gas was priced with a $1-- in front of it. Even on the west coast, I had to red-eye to Alaska via LAX. Free-flight routing.

I went every day to see if they were flying (4 day trip). This was easy to do since Alyeaska does not open until 10am-1030am? even in March.

It was typical NW weather. Maybe 3-6" from a random wave of snow.

However, they did not fly 3 out of my 4 days when there.

My only other experience with heli-skiing is RK Heli SKi in Panorama, BC near Banff. They flew during a 2" Panorama dump and a 10" RK dump.

I do not know whether my experience is typical. But they do not seem scared to shut the operation down in iffy weather. I saw the other clients/skiers every mourning -- 3 other guys and my brother and I -- I think economically it works. Just thinking about other reasons besides weather. We would call every 30 min for updates to see if we would fly.

However, they do snowcat skiing too. There was a work group from FEDEX there that had the cat rented for their stay. From Atlanta, GA.

Anyways, I think the Chugach Powder Guides are safe, but a bit of a pain. It's a bit of a let down to call them for updates at 830, 900, 930, 1000, 1030....and get turned down. But the skiing, when open, was great. Really good.

If you have a stretch of nice weather, I would mix up the dates.

All this talk about Heli Skiing has inspired me to dig out my old photos of my Heli trip.
This trip was from the 90's. I skiied with Kootney Heli Skiing.. They were based in Naksup B.C.. It snowed over 6' that week , luckely we had only on down day. We all went Curlling that day  It was the 1st and only time I experienced snow over my head. To say I struggled was a understatement.

That last picture is more representative of my 3 days at Kootenay (one was a down day) in 2002 (reports http://216.250.243.13/discus2/messages/ ... 1015887950 and http://216.250.243.13/discus2/messages/ ... 1016405588 ).

My day at RK March 30, 1999 was bluebird with 18 inches new light and dry over the previous 3 days. Pace was a little slow early but the last 2 runs after the 3-run groups were done were very impressive. Overall that day at RK was similar to my recent day in NZ with Harris.

I am very aware that I am rolling the dice with CPG as far as weather is concerned. I am unfortunately constrained by my son's spring break and needing to leave Alaska on Wednesday March 28 (1AM flight) to get to the NASJA annual in Crested Butte. CPG wants everyone in a Sunday-Saturday or Monday-Friday package, and it took some begging to get even Saturday/Sunday reserved.
