Apologies to Anon

I retract my earlier comments about Killington, at least those regarding the weather potential for snowmaking and opening October 25 this year, in view of the torrential rains we received.

I took my rain gauge inside last weekend because I thought it was time to start measuring snow, so I don't know how much rain I got.

Mt Washington Obs. reports 4.59" of rain last 24 hours.

This certainly washed away any of the two feet of snow that had fallen on Mt. W. in October.

If the Green Mountains received anything like this, it would have wiped out any snowmaking base Killington could have hoped to lay down.

Not a good turn of events for what had been shaping up as a twice-normal snowfall year...

Sorry, Anon.

Lftgly, the "anonymous" who was writing that Killington had no moral obligation to open soon... etc..... is not "Anon".

Unless Anon writes anonymously his messages "pro"-Killington, this is 2 different persons !

I admit for the rain that they would have lost most of their snowmaking and this was a good accountant decision to not open (but I'm not sure that the marketing of the resort is agreeing with the accountancy !! OUCH !)

that's what i'm sayin, wasn't trying to cause a ruckus, but just trying to give a little credence to the fact that they weren't blowing snow due to 10 day forecasts

maybe soon i'll even get a real username

but i'm sure Joegm thinks they should be blowing snow when its 58 and raining hard out

boooooooooiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg

OK, this is getting confusing, so...

I need a show of hands: should I disable anonymous posting? In reality, it's always anonymous for anyone who wants to be, you just need to post with a nickname. However, some may not realize that and feel intimidated out of posting. What do y'all think?

hehe, Joegm is possibly the most "radical" of us, may be cause he has a season pass at K. But he's really right on the fact that the ski industry has some problems actually, leaded by the savage capitalism of most of the industries in North America, actually, cause of the asks of the financials who always want the best cash-flows (and benefits), or they drop the value of the companies, making them become in danger.

(BTW, don't you worry, I'm not a communist)

Personnaly, I don't consider the ski areas like some companies, but like some non-profit organisms, so even though I learn at school that we must push the margins & all, I would never be able to applicate that in a ski area. I would try to not lose money, that's all... not to increase my margins of 50% by shorting the ski season or so...

LOL, I agree that this becomes a little bit confusing and it's sad to not be able to spot a user when he writes 2-3+ times anonymously.

Although, to remove the chance to write anonymously is not really a good idea, cause we could lose some posts, made by persons who don't want to be known for X reasons. (like to not be recognized if they look to internet at work and don't want that their boss know it... and see the number of posts they'd done in the last weeks/months.) (example)

So I may have an idea about what to do :

Disable the function "click to Post as "Anonymous"", but write (if possible) near the username box that we can write "anonymous" in the username box, if we don't want to be recognized. As writing it is as long as finding a decent username, I think that only few people (with good reasons) would write "anonymous".

Any thoughts on this ? (I'm not psychologist neither)

Again, though, unless they put in an email address (which is clearly marked as optional) they can use any name they want, as long as it's not the name already owned by a registered user. Therefore, despite the removal of the "anonymous" box, no one -- employer, friend, reader, etc. -- is going to know who it was simply from reading the board.

Yeah, but if they take a person while he's writing a message and see the nickname he has written, they just have to look in the other threads to see that he wrote 150 messages in the last months... oops for the guy

(yeah, I know I paranoid a bit, sometimes !)
Should be my Quebeker way of think

Anyway, this was just an example, there is multiple reasons why to wanna post anonymously. I find it sad, but I don't think that removing completely this right would be a + for the no-bulls !

Frankontour has me right. The anonymous referred to here is not me. While I do ski at the big K every once in a while, it is not one of my favorites. The size and terrain are great, but the crowds and the hype turn me off.

wow, this is all too confusing!

is it possible to put a registration form on the BB? i haven't even officially registered since there was no form despite posting here often through the last two years. perhaps making it easier to sign up for an account on FTO would reduce some anon. posting?

disabling the "Post as "Anonymous"" option would at least force people to pick a user name which might help. people could always still write in Anonymous, so i don't think we'd loose any input since it's still an open forum.

anonymous, first it's they are not opening because it's been too warm. ( compared to previous historical temps, we proved you wrong on that one ) now it's because they had a ten day forecast that predicted a massive rainstorm. you have got to be kidding me!?...as hard as this might be for you to do, let's look at this with some logic. but before that ( for the third time now ) let's review what the issue has been ) the issue started out and still is, whether there has been a major shift in the opening day philosophy of asc in general and k in particular... in all of the previous years that we looked at and had historical temps for ( admittedly temps being only 1 factor of a couple of consequence ) there were large variations in temps which included some spikes well past the 60's for sustained periods. this of course assumes one accepts the accuracy of the temp readout given. ( the veracity of which you appear to question ) a number of people maintained that the reason they were not attempting to open at any point in october was because of an apparent organizational decision that , barring anything short of record setting natural snowfall, they would not be spending the money/investment to try and open. some people , me included expressed their dismay with that new approach. you chimed in with what essentially was a post stating " "stop your whining and hipocracy... ( i didn't and still don't get the hipocracy part ) "the reason they are not opening is becasue it's been too warm." BASED ON PAST YEARS TEMPS, it was not too warm and clearly you were wrong with that statement. next you came on and implied that some of us wanted the asc to go and expend " $200,000 in snow making so we could get in october turns, regardless of the weather conditions... no one ever said this; you made it up trying to paint anyone who is unhappy with the new approach of the asc as completely unreasonable. now you come on and wonder out loud if i am upset that they are not attempting to blow snow in a torrential rain storm. please..
to state that the reason they were not blowing snow for the previous 10 days because they had a 10 day forecast that predicted the massive amounts of rain received in the previous 24 hours is laughable... anyone with any common sense knows the accuracy percentages with 10 day forecasts are very small. to come on the DAY AFTER the weather event takes place with the see i told you so message, is transparent at best. if grady little had your foresight, he might still be managing the red sox... i guess grady didn't call you though. hindsight is a great thing... this is a classic case of what tony c calls, doing something right for the wrong reason. obvoiusly they look pretty smart now not blowing all the snow and having it flushed right down the you know what... that has never been the issue... i don't know how many times in plain english it can be explained .. the issue is the delayed opening to ensure an amount of paid daily revenue to meet their preset margins. it's a marked shift in the previous years philosophical approach...there seems to be general agreement that killington , in and of itself, makes money... i don't know this for sure, but i have to believe that if a place like k , all things constant, operates in the red , then pretty much no-one makes money, and if that's the case, how are any ski areas operating?. if we assume k in and of itself makes money, but then factor in that k is part of a company that clearly is not making money, the picture becomes clear, even to a high school freshman in intro economics class. the parts that lose money are going to be reevaluated and reorganized and the parts that do make money are going to be even further streamlined to bring in even more profit( yep that's k) to help the bottom line. some people don't like the fact that k's early and late season's are being cut to boost the profit. we don't have to like it and asc has every right not to give rat's as if we like it.... they can do what ever they want, and they are. that's why we are not skiing in october anonymous, not becasue it's been too warm. and certainly not becasue of some brilliantly insightful 10 day forecast. if the guy who told k not to blow snow because of the 10 day u speak of had called the boston red sox 10 days prior to game 7, , then the red sox would have beat the yankees, grady would have a job, and we'd all have a happy christmas. get real.

Don't you think we went a little bit far into this war against (or for) Killington and ASC.

Personnaly, now I laugh of the situation more than finding it frustrating.

I would like to know the cost of snowmaking operations in USA. To open in october a trail like the one at Killington last year on oct 25, here, this would cost close to 200 000$, but it would have some snow for all the season's length, though. Snowmaking is extremely expensive, at least in Quebec. Of course, making snow just on the Rime and East Glade would be 5-6x less expensive. The average of $ made by the company by ski-day, last year is 63$. So with this number, not considering the passholders who already paid for their season pass, this would take about 500 skiers overall to pay the snowmaking (on a 30000$ base for snowmaking on Rime/E-G). Problem... all the other operating expenses It's tough to establish a model to know exactly how much skiers are required to make Killington profitable in october, cause I don't have the exact numbers for all the expenses

Anyway, for the moment, we can't do nothing to make Killington open faster, so let's just hope that the forecast will remain the same, starting next monday, cause starting at this moment, we should see the first real attempt of Killington to open in the following days !

u r right frank... i'm sure anonymous is a good guy, who just wants to ski... i'm just all fired up cause of my premature ending last season on march 19th... even with the epic blackcomb summer camp this past july, i'm chompin at the bit to make turns... at this point i don't care if they are on grass 1/2 the time!!!!it's been beat to death.. i'm done with it.. anonymous gets the last shot!!!! :-)

and one more thing, just looked at lftgly's opening 3rd paragraph... i think the generally accepted ratio for rain to snow is about 9 to one in terms of inches... i'll bet they probably would have had to open if we got a 40 inch dump!!!! wouldn't it be nice!!!!

i'd love it to dump, lets pray for some normal winter temperatures, so we can all start making turns

Soon guys, soon

Yeah, here too, all the rain we got in the last days, it's incredible. I hope we'll have a big snowfall year, like they forecast !

I admit you have a good reason to be so much eager to ski, Joegm, especially as it happened at Loon (doh !)

I can tell you that some grass turns can be quite interesting, also, as I saw it last week, when the grass is perfect ! hahaha

Some guys went to Idaho (from Utah) with an even better idea... check that, it worths the look !!

http://www.sltrib.com/2003/Oct/10272003/utah/utah.asp

(thanks to Marc to have put it on the skinews)

Referring to the old plan of uploading/downloading on K1 and the truck, she simply stated, "We're not going to do that anymore. From here on out, we'll only open if we can go top-to-bottom sustained."

So, there y'all go.

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
we should see the first real attempt of Killington to open in the following days ! <!-/Quote-!>

Well, they won't be able to blow snow until Monday night at the earliest. The official line, again from today's phone call, is that they're shooting for next weekend -- that Saturday, Nov. 8, is Okemo's scheduled opening. I spoke with their spokesperson today as well, again on a matter unrelated to this discussion, and she said that they understand that even Nov. 8 is iffy if the cold weather is delayed at all. She speculated that if they could start blowing snow by Nov. 5, the 8th is still possible.

Thanks for the feedback about it, Marc !

November 8... imagine, this would be the worst opening day in over 30 years... times have changed a lot !

Marc, did you got some news from the Massif du Sud ?

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
Marc, did you got some news from the Massif du Sud ?<!-/Quote-!>

Yes, I confirmed that it is true.
