The last few years my family has taken our last ski trip to killington during our late April week of from school. This year our week comes very late (April 18 - 27) so we're struggling to find out who is planning on still being open. Any insights would be helpful.

thaks,

wildcat probably cannot make the committment so early, but if they have the snow to make it down the hill they have been pretty good about staying open in the last few years....
areas can say all they want now about what they intend to do, but it's just talk and hope....when K was showing a real committment to skier years ago, you could make that trip with those dates with confidence...that disgrace of a hill , killington, and for that matter pretty much everywhere now, makes no real investment whatsoever in trying to attract people to ski during the time you are talking about...sugarbush seems to be trying , but they are no different than really...they won't commit to blowing the hell out of one trail and assuring the turns...they'll spin if the snow is there.. they are just not gonna put it there to make it a lock.....it's nothing short of a travesty and a disgrace on the ski industry's part....if there were more smart people like you, and less dumb people who jam the places on mlk weekend and feb vacation, you would be able to book your trip with authority and confidence.....you deserve a ton of credit for trying to bring the family out during that time period....people are just so stupid and can't see it is the best time to ski.....unfortunately , anyone open, including cat, loaf and saddleback, are going to be open because the weather was good and they get lucky, it just that simple.. it shouldn't be that way, but it is....jay peak seems to do their weekend only nonsense and despite all they hype about their snowfall totals, they are overrated for the late spring cause they don't make enough snow for when the durabilty of the snow becomes a factor
if cat is open, i hope you support them and go there, but it is gambling for sure because without a solid base on a snowmaking trail like K did on SS it can become a day to day operation and a risk with high consequences for the vacation minded family

My last day at Jay last year was 4/22. They had snow but it was disappearing fast. Still some good turns to be made but the place was almost empty. When people stop showing up, areas won't stay open. Costs too much to spin the lifts and all the other stuff to make it more than bragging rights for a late close date. As long as people show up and there's snow to ski on, most places will stay open if they can. Jay is probably a pretty good bet for that week but there may be others.

I was able to do little research and a little calling around and found that below ski areas state that their closing date is:

stowe ? (discounted ticket prices start 3/31)
Sugarbush? (discounted ticket prices start 3/30)
Jay ?
Whiteface 4/15
saddleback 4/20
sunday river 4/27
mt st anne 4/27
Sugarloaf 5/4 (discounted ticket prices start 3/31)

thanks,

you just have to remember that stated closing dates, without being able to show that you have been doing a superstar on a trail like K used to do, mean nothing if the weather decides not to cooperate....the total natural snowfall total means nothing at all at this point... if it gets warm and rains, and there is no artifical base built up, they won't be spinning for long

I think you will be safe at the Loaf or the river. Same with sugarbush.

I still think the Loaf holds the snow the best late season. Wildcat can do the weekend open mid week close fairly easily. Curious to see how they handle it. May there last year was great.

I will be going to the loaf the week after that if they continue mid week operations for nh vacation week. I think the 5/4 loaf date is a very conservative one. Rumors on other boards suggest later dates for the Loaf.

Best bet for excellent coverage and best skiing that week would definitely be Mont Ste-Anne (record snow year in Quebec City) and Sugarloaf.

joegm is one of the few realists around here about eastern spring weather. Anyone who want to advance book for as late as April 22-27 should be going west.

Patrick is correct about Mt. St. Anne's huge season. No question it should do best in the East this spring. But if it's a warm spring the south facing front will melt down and you will just have the shorter northside runs with gondola for transport.

We'll see.
