ASC acknowledges potential sale of Sunday River & Sugarl

Veeeeeeery interesting. It would be nice to have a some competition amongts ski areas again. That would definately benifit the consumer.

While it would be nice to see ASC dump its entirely portfolio of New England ski areas, it would be a tragedy if the man who got ASC into unbearable debt returned to take over the reigns after the slate of debt was wiped clean. Something about that seems terribly unjust in my view of the world. But that is reality.

From what I've read, Les Otten did a pretty good job of resuscitating Sunday River. It's when he decided to build a ski area empire that he got in trouble.

Doesn't seem fair, but it happens a fair amount in the hospitality industry where a property like a hotel or resort goes under and about the only option is the original backers get to buy it back but stripped of all the debt load.

Yes, he was successful in taking a small area and turning it into a viable competitor for Killington (where Les came from in the first place).

Turning a ski area that didn't have the terrain that Killington had and finding a way to make it as interesting (by expanding) in a few years. Snowmaking, grooming, late closing. The problem started when we started looking into expanding with other ski areas (Sugarbush). SKI Ltd started the same logic, each of them started a buying spree in this ski war of king of the East, the last one standing took over all the marbles (and the debts).

The incredible ASC pass deal will be history, however I hope that we gain more independent minded ski area trying to go their thing. The new local owners of Sugarbush seem to be on the right track. Let's hope that Sugarloaf, Sunday and Killington new owners try to bring innovation is what is/were the East's top ski areas.
