I defy anyone to beat the nutso conditions the Catskills have had to endure this season.
On the ride up, it was raining steadily the entire way until we got within five miles of Belleayre, where it turned to snow. Apparently, Belleayre had four inches of new snow Saturday morning, and overnight, another two inches fell, which were sitting on top of a base that I'd describe as "carvable ice." Sounds appetizing, huh?
Actually, it wasn't bad at all. My warmup runs down an untracked Yahoo were really soft, and when I met with Jason and his two daughters at 9:30, we found that, as has been the deal all winter long, the upper pitches were mostly hardscrabble, but the lower 2/3 of every trail was in nice shape for high-speed carving. The woods and ungroomed were strictly at-your-own-risk... unfortunately, it's been that kind of season.
Nice day with the jasoncapecod family, and apologies to hard-charging daughter Kayla, who was none too happy with my selection of trails.
Here's a shout-out for the guy at the Tomahawk Midstation -- he's been there forever, it seems -- who's always playing classical music and operas and waves at every single chair the entire day. Everyone digs him.
