Belleayre

Somewhat off-point: why hasn't NH allowed Cannon to be run by a private operator?

It's come up in the state legislature a number of times. Unlike Sunapee, Franconia Notch is a major state park and the former location of the Old Man in the Mountain before it came crashing down a couple o' years ago. The people arguing against leasing it want to avoid scaling up the resort and trash the area with yet another ski area sprawl development. That argument wins given the significance of the non-skiing stuff in the area.

The other difference is that the Sunapee lease money from the Muellers is used to fund Cannon capital improvement. Cannon shows an operating profit and doesn't cost the state a dime.

Can somebody explain to me why New York State is feeding money to a state-owned ski area when there are plenty of nearby ski areas that are viable as private businesses? Is there something unique about Belleayre or could the state just lease out the ski area the way New Hampshire does to the Muellers at Sunapee?

Geoff, it looks like this leasing racket doesn't always work out as well as you suggested:
