Best bet for Thanksgiving in Vt or 'dacks

So maybe the lift-served season will get under way this weekend in Vermont and the Adirondacks. So, you old-timers: Which is my best bet for Friday, Saturday, and maybe Sunday out of:

Killington
Stowe
Sugarbush
Whiteface?

(and would Gore be worth the trouble? It's the closest to home; I might do just a half-day there on the way to somewhere else.)

Any thoughts?

Any chance of at least one decent mogul run at any of these places?

This is probably going to be the craziest Thanksgiving on the slopes ever (if someone opens). A gazillions people on very limited terrain.

Mogul run? I really don't know, I don't know what they will be able to open if they open this week.

I tend to doubt a mogul run. Should the get the weather necessary to blow snow, they're going to blow it as wet as possible to lay down a durable layer. Bumps require traffic, and I'm having a hard time picturing the snow to be soft enough to form reasonable bumps that aren't the occasional-bump-separated-by-huge-expanses-of-boilerplate variety.

anything slippery enough to slide is fine. wait until the afternoon for the crowds to dissipate. hell, i'll even skin it!

As I understand it, the folks at the Bush really want to open with FIS off the summit of Ellen. Not sure if they have the snowmaking window to pull that off though. But if so, and if there's enough skier traffic, you can expect some small bump lines to form. Understand though, that you will need to download on the GMX, i.e. they won't be offering top-to-bottom.

Stowe just updated their website, and now a set opening day isn't specified. This weekend they were claiming that they would be open on 11/22, but now that seems in doubt.

kmart is the best bet, especially if you are looking for the possibility of bumps. i have done kmart twice on opening weekend... both times there were small bumps to be found. though, bunny buster as a bump full of noobs is a site to behold! i am not sure how stowe has opened historically.

ill be in the same area at the same time. Does anyone know which ski area will likely have the most open terrain, and or least crowds? ill probably try and go on the 25th.

every place will be packed this weekend, especially considering you are adding opening weekend and every jonesing skier that normally wouldn't ski on a holiday weekend to a holiday weekend. i suspect areas furthest from the metro areas will be the least crowded, but the trade off will be less open terrain (jay, loaf, etc.) compared to kmart, stowe, etc.

SUGARLOAF IS OPEN

Sugarloaf/USA is Open for the Season
Monday, November 20, 2006

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - Sugarloaf/USA is the first resort in Maine to open for the season and the only resort in New England currently open for skiing and riding.

Sugarloaf?s alpine elevation enabled snowmaking to begin Saturday afternoon with up to 80 low-energy snowguns. As a result of the progress that was made from Saturday through Monday, resort officials decided to kick off the season on Monday afternoon.

For the first time on Opening Day, Sugarloaf is offering skiing and riding on the Tote Road trail, with lift access from the SuperQuad, to provide nearly 2 miles of skiing covering almost 2,000 vertical feet.

The SuperQuad is scheduled to operate from 8:30 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. seven days a week. Lift tickets are currently $29.

So else who is opening?

Here are some dates...

Thursday Nov 23rd:
Kmart
Sugarbush
Okemo

Friday Nov 24th:
Tremblant
Smuggs
Bolton
Bretton Woods
Wildcat

Saturday Nov 25th:
Ste-Anne
Waterville

Jay says maybe for Saturday. Damn cold out today (relative to last week at least  so they have even had temps low enough to blast the lower jet. I see no reason why they can not make Saturday.

They need to make a lot of snow to handle a crowd... There was only 1/3 of the hill still white last w-e... Now according to the pic on the website, they should be open on saturday... I hope they won't... I'll hike again to earn my turns as long as there is no decent snow on the ground for me to ride the chairlifts!

i am right with you bigjay about hiking if they aren't open. but i would much rather have a crowded lift serviced day than earn turns on man made this weekend. especially since i am a pass holder ;)

Hunter has made enough snow to just about reach the base already...more cold today and tonight.

Not official yet, but Hunter will probably open on T-day (11/23).
