Best Chance for Face Shot in North East

Bluebird Day

Holiday Valley, New York?

Very windy Thursday AM, cold and heavy snow through the weekend. Lake effect snow through Saturday morning with feet of snow possible. Thursday high 22 low 15, Friday 22/14. A bit warmer during the day over the weekend with possible sun on Sunday. =D> Great thing about this report is that out West this report would read extreme avy risk, out East, no beacon and shovel needed.

Skied there often in college and had some great powder days. Small, but had a good bar. I once saw the band 10,000 Maniacs play at a bar in Jamestown, NY in the early 80's. Drinking age was 18 then. \:D/

Saw them at a tiny bar in a residential area in Rensselaer, NY for my 21st birthday, Jan. 30, 1987. Maybe 20 of us in the bar total.

Natalie Merchant is from the Jamestown area. That's where they started out. I saw them play the Continental Club near Chippewa St. in Buffalo many moons ago. As a side note...they sucked that night. Holiday should be good for fresh snow. It looked like they were getting hammered by the snow coming off the lake. KB looked like it would be getting it's share too but not much vert....not that Holiday has that much either. If you get out, have fun! Windblown pow should get you a face shot or two.

Saw 10,000 Maniacs open for REM in 1984. Good to see a band from upstate/western NY make it big, but I couldn't get past that annoying lead singer.

Tug got 18 last night and

21 in 1987 and 18 in 1984 in the early 80???

James, you got it wrong. You thought that BBD was Marc, you might have been on to something, but you might got your Marcs mixed up. :-k

WOW, I remembering the partying to the awesome music and atmosphere at the Continental back in June 1987. We had just seen The Who in Toronto and had gone down to Buffalo for the weekend. Way too hot and way too much drinking to remember much.

See? No one believed me. All of the EC expats out there (and their aliases) start sounding the same after a while.

:-s James... What's with the string of nonsensical posts? Lay off the 'shrooms!
I'm flying out to shroomland (or at least it was when I was living there) later today. Trying to get the old steeze back.

Not sure how I ended up with triple posts... feel free to delete them.

You've lived in multiple locations out here before. I don't recall which you're flying to today -- clarify, please!

And no, it's more fun leaving those posts up there.

I'll surprise you with a report from a to-be-determined western hardpack trail.

Good to see that Eastern forecasters aren't the only ones who hype storms that end up being complete busts. I should cancel and head up to the 18 inches of lake effect at l'il ol' Snow Ridge.

Is pretty good and white here, but not sure if I'll get to ski-it this weekend.

NWS is calling for 1-2 feet here this weekend, while the Avalanche Center predicts 2-3 feet.

9" was way under-reporting the actual totals. Knee to waist deep, everything
off Heaven's Gate and Valley House opened today. My first run on the Mall
was top three lifetime. Castlerock opens tomorrow for hiking from the Gate.

This just in from Snow Ridge:
This report is effective 9am Friday, December 11, 2009.

This is the report everyone has been looking for. We received 18" of snow overnight and it's still snowing. If it's snow you've been hoping we get, than snow is what we have and Snow Ridge is the place to be.

Snow Ridge will be open on Saturday, December 12 from 9am - 4pm with 2 lifts serving 10+ trails. We will be skiing and riding on a 4" to 20" base with a machine groomed, packed powder, powder, powder surface.

Here's the NWS forecast for that area

I may head to the Tug this weekend when the road conditions allow.

I'd be soft-pedaling that hype for the moment. It's going to take more than that to expand terrain with the current meager 2-foot natural base depths in the Cottonwoods. Alta's snowfall-to-date is 51% of normal even if you count October, and since November 1 it's 28%. You locals will get more than your fair share this season as you always do, but if I were coming for Christmas week I'd be getting a bit nervous. Park City group and Snowbasin/Powder Mt. will need massive dumps like 2 years ago for any shot at decent holiday skiing this season.

A buddy went up this morning made only one run as he couldn't see anything and was worried about get stranded up their. He stated it took him a hr to go 5 miles when he got into the LE band

Yikes!

I figured we'd wait until the LES died down. Sounds really intense up there right now. Should make for some deep powder runs at Snow Ridge. Trying to round up a few pals to make the trip. Maybe we'll cya there Kevin.

Sugarbush's afternoon (2pm) update states 12" of new in past 24 hours. Wow, I can't believe they are squeezing out so much moisture form this Lake Effect event. I would imagine the rest of the Northern Greens are pulling impressive numbers as well. Powderqueen, definitely happy you got to catch the dropping ropes all across Sugarbush - sounds epic (those pictures on the link made me drool!) Last Sunday there was a fun start to my season, but what a difference 5 days make, my gosh! Very jealous I can't make it there this weekend, but hopefully things stay this great into the 18th weekend!
