Well I haven't posted in a while. I've been really busy skiing. But as Burke winds down the season, I figured I'd get one more post in. Last Saturday was Burke's pond skimming day. I saw this a few years back and wanted to try it. This year I was finally able to do it and it was a blast. The weather was beautiful and the snow was perfect.
I arrived at the mountain at 8:15 with buddy, Ryan (had to roust him out of bed). We registered for the Pond skimming and decided to ski until the festivities started. We didn't go into the woods
due to someones haircut preventing the use of a helmet (see pics below) . There was actually packed powder on a lot of the runs that don't receive a lot of sun. The mountain hadn't lost any snow over the previous week despite warm temps in the valleys. We ripped groomers and bumps all morning. It felt great. I didn't put on any sunblock until 11:00. I already had a sunburn at this point  . The groomers were fast and smooth and the bumps were still kind of hard in the morning. The first bump run to soften up was Upper Warren's Way. This trail had no snowmaking on it this year and was allowed to fill in with natural cover. This caused there to be wind swept rock fields in teh middle of the trail. However, the skiers left drifted in nicely. The last few weeks I have been getting sweet powdery (corn bumps this week) bump runs on this trail.
Anyway onto the pond skimming. This is the big local event of the early Spring as the crowd is big and so is the party
. Ryan made it to the forth round and I made it to the fifth. I don't think I did too bad considering I was on 173cm skis. The guy that won was on 225s! I had a blast and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Enjoy the pics!
