in hind sight, i really really should have dawn patrolled this one. but the storm went by faster than i had anticipated, not dropping anything at all today, so my timing was all out of whack. i left work early to go earn some turns down the road at closed burke mountain. this was originally suppose to be a bi-weekly routine at a minimum, except with lifts, but that didn't work out this season. but who needs lifts? so much harder to get top to bottom untracked fresh with lifts! \:D/ YEA, BABY!

okay, it wasn't exactly powdery. it seemed like i was in a race against the time of consolidation and packing of snow when i first got there, but no worries, untracked is untracked :) snow was moist but not completely wet and packed down. wet with a little fluff, an odd combination. it looked like fun as it proved to be. i tracked up lower warren's to bear den to willoughby on the skin up. as i approached mid-mountain, i noticed the wet snow was slightly slabbed on the surface on the open slope with more powdery lighter snow conditions on skier's left under the trees. duely noted for the descent! 4" of the thick consistancy stuff was the rule, deeper in places occasionally. i suspect burke actually picked up 6" at mid-mountain before it started consolidating.

three important items i was trying out today. first, i was trying out my freerides for the first time since the accident. rationally and reasonablly, i knew the problem that caused the accident was a bad DIN setting. but still, i wanted an easy run to regain some of that unconscious trust before tackling the tougher stuff. next up, just bought a patagonia ready mix jacket which rocks my world, just what i was missing. works really well for skiing, my only complaint is the sizing runs small so even with an XL, i felt slightly constrictive with a fleece underneath. no big deal though, otherwise, definite thumbs up for a light weight wind jacket. finally, i was trying out my elbow which held up admirably during the ascent. finally able to stabilize most of, if not my entire, body weight on my right arm with a pole.

first turns off the summit were, um... interesting! skis were not going where i was requesting the legs to turn them to say the least. it was wind blown slab that was definitely NOT edgible, but didn't ski like powder completely either, but adjusting my powder technique worked better than adjusting an edging technique, so i worked my way down to the goods. just above the jungle entrance, i found sweet sweet sweet powder on skier's left and i rocked it. felt soooooo nice. by the time i got to the birches entrance, even skier's left was kinda "wet fluff" if you would... so i looked at the entire trail of beautifully untracked white and decided to put some big half eights into the snow, sah-weet!!! tightened up the turns as i approached bear den and ripped some great turns as i neared the quad. nearly doubled over laughing so hard that i had the entire place to myself. might have only been +4" of moderately "wet fluff," but it was all mine on a beautiful april afternoon with not a soul in sight.

the way this season has gone, i think it might only be getting started...

Nice. That is so cool being able to get turns after work or school.
So is that new jacket a softshell. I love softshells so much, after getting one about a month ago of SAC I will never go back, you feel so free in them.

How about before work?

Yeah, thats even better. The ideal situation would be working second shift and living within a half an hour of a ski area(SLC and LCC/BCC)

after realizing the weather wasn't doing what i suspected it might, i knew dawn patrol was the preferred option... but by then the hand was dealt and no way out. ideally, i am going to try to catch a sunrise on burke next week, weather pending and snow not melting, which is going to be a tough comb.

the jacket is listed as a soft shell, but while i was doing my research, it seemed like anything that wasn't 100% water proof was being called a soft shell  looks like the big buzz word. i was looking for something more on a wind breaker side with some of the benefits of the soft shell push (really good breathability being the most important) and this fit the bill nicely. even with a fleece underneath, i wouldn't want to be out in weather colder than say... 20 degrees with this setup. ideal for early/late season skiing.

I think you will be suprised. I know softshells amazed me in how warm they are, but then again I am sick and only wear a shell plus 2 really thin layers no matter how cold it is.

Anyway, where did you choose tomorrow for skiing. I say you should go to saddleback...

Except for one product testing day, I've always worn a thin EMS softshell out here, even at 5 degrees. Admittedly it's dry here, but still...

interestingly enough, i checked saddleback's web site a few hours ago and they were only listing 2" and not much open. i should have double checked the date because that apparently was an old report! 12" new with nearly all the expert terrain open. i have long been interested in doing saddleback and it was on this year's "to do" list. looks like a perfect opportunity! i had been planning on wildcat, but saddleback looks to be a solid option. not for a chance at fresh snow though, that stuff is probably guaranteed sludge by now, but still, this looks like fun.

this "soft shell" is definitely more "shell." honestly, i couldn't even believe how thin it was! i thought it would be more substantial. i am going to give it a rip with a fleece and under shirt and see how it goes on a colder day, but i will have a parka close at hand in the event it doesn't quite do it. even though this jacket is billed as a "soft shell," it really isn't any where close to what most soft shells seem to have for weight and thickness. but i'll be giving it a shot.

I tend to always be hot, but I ski with a soft shell and just a thin capaline undershirt many days, often to about 10 degrees. Colder than that I put a fleece on as well...

I definitely find the soft shell a touch warmer than the plain gortex
