Camp Fortune opening at 10am and the rest of Ottawa scene

Camp Fortune is opening Pineault today at 10am (vert for that run is about 85 meters vertical) which I believe is the third ski area to open in Quebec.

http://www.campfortune.com/en/ski/conditions.php

So I have a local option for skiing this weekend, last time I bother going on Pineault in November was in 2005...which became month #2 in this ski streak.

Other local news.

Edelweiss, Vorlage and Cascades are hoping to open on December 1st.

Mont Ste-Marie (which is the biggest and further) is aiming for December 8th.

Ontario side of the river:

Pakenham is looking at either December 1th or 8th.

Calabogie Peaks aiming for December 1th.

What kind of vertical is there on your Ottawa hills? Smaller than the 1,600-ish feet we get in the Catskills?

Much smaller, but closer also.

A quick response.... Information on ski areas are in French and written by yours truly. Distances are from memory.

Camp Fortune in Chelsea, QC - 180m/590ft (approx. 15km from downtown)

Mont Cascades in Cantley, QC - 160m/525ft (approx. 25km from downtown)
http://www.vivelaneige.com/station57/

Edelweiss in Wakefield, QC - 200m/655ft (approx. 35km from downtown)
http://www.vivelaneige.com/station56/

Vorlage in Wakefield, QC - 138m/452ft (approx. 35km from downtown)
http://www.vivelaneige.com/station54/

Mont Ste-Marie in Lac Ste-Marie, QC - 381m/1,250ft (approx. 90km from downtown). (text in link below is from Christophe from Zoneski)
http://www.vivelaneige.com/station4/

And then there is the retro-Mont Chilly in the Pontiac which is 2 hour away. (150m/492ft). Never been, but here is the text I wrote. anyways.http://www.vivelaneige.com/station7/

General information from the Outaouais region (on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River). (text also by myself).

There are also two ski areas on the Ontario side.

Mt. Pakenham in Pakenham, ON - 80m/265ft (approx. 60km from downtown)

Calabogie Peaks in Calabogie, ON - 232m/760ft (one of Ontario's biggest vertical) (approx 100km from downtown).

However a good number of Ottawa skiers head to Tremblant which is 100 miles away (2 hour drive).

Tremblant is the closest "real mountain," correct? Does 3 hours get you to the Townships, Whiteface or anything else noteworthy?

It depends of the definition of "real mountain" as Mt Ste-Marie is 1,250ft vert. However I agree with your definition of Tremblant being the closer real mountain. 160km / 2 hours

Whiteface is 250km away / 3 hour drive is my second option outside the immediate area.

Townships and Jay are roughtly 300-325 km away (Bromont being the closest then Sutton and Orford. Owl's Head and Jay the fardest). However you need to drive through Montreal. (3 to 3 1/2 hours)

It could be worst, I could be in Toronto where Blue Mtn is 2 hours away and has the same vert as Calabogie Peaks.

From a skiing perspective Toronto is Midwest, like Detroit or Buffalo IMHO. Ottawa strikes me as better than NYC but not quite as good as Boston.

From my house, I'm 2-2.5 hours to Hunter, Belleayre, Windham, Plattekill, and Bobcat.

In the same drive time, you've got Tremblant, La Reserve, the Laurentian hills + your nearby Ottawa joints.

You make do with what you've got, and go to bigger places when you can. My first day will be Sunday at Hunter... they should be top-to- bottom with the cold coming back Friday morning through the weekend.

will be at hunter on saturday. gotta work on sunday
don't think one day will be enough time to open to the bottom.. should be ONE hell of a run.. Hell gate is going to look like the beach at normandy

I guess I need to finish that metro cities analysis for the "Where to Live" discussion from last year.

What's the point? All of us on the Northeast forum have been systemically reprogrammed to believe that we'll be miserable wretches unless we move to Seattle or SLC.

Good News for the Ottawa area.

NEAR 10 CENTIMETRES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FALL TONIGHT WITH AN ADDITIONAL 10 CENTIMETRES TO FOLLOW ON THURSDAY. HIGHER SNOW AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO FALL OVER HIGHER TERRAIN. REGIONS ACROSS EASTERN ONTARIO INCLUDING OTTAWA HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED SNOW FROM A PREVIOUS DISTURBANCE AND WILL CONTINUE TO SEE SNOW FALL TONIGHT AND INTO THURSDAY. TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS NEAR 15 CENTIMETRES BY THURSDAY NIGHT ARE POSSIBLE AS THE WINTER STORM SLOWLY MOVES EAST ACROSS THE LOWER LAKES TONIGHT INTO NEW ENGLAND BY THURSDAY NIGHT.

Excellent. The hills may be small but they are ours. More snow please.

Thinking of sneeking away to make a few turns this afternoon in all this fresh snow (something like 20cm at my house in Central Ottawa).

:x :x :x :x :x :x

Well Fortune opened on Tuesday (the snow started on Wednesday) and from then until December 13th, they are open ONLY on weekends from 9 to 4.

:bs:

Why did they even bother opening for one day (without any advance notice) and then closed until the weekend? :x Who was talking about Marketing??? :x

Yup. People are leery about buying passes or multi-ticket deals if the snow isn't looking good. Well, there is a lot of snow on the ground in the city early in the season for a change and this is a good opportunity. I'd at least open for a few nights with limited runs and cheap tickets, and push the dual mountian 5 ticket packages.

As mentioned in this post...Snow Day!!! (Wind Day?)

Well someone finally woke up.

Edelweiss QC and Calabogie ON opened today with night skiing starting tomorrow for Edelweiss.

Edelweiss QC : 3 runs / 2 lifts - 14in/36cm in the last 48.

Calabogie Peaks ON: 7 runs - new snow 4cm with 50cm base on their website. Unfortunately not sure those numbers would include what fell on Sun/Mon.

Cascade was open this week too. But, unfortunately, the website shows 6 runs open, and they are charging full pop but only 2 runs are open, 1 the small beginner run. I went with 4 teens last night, with tickets and supper it was a lot of $ for what they had. First outing of the year for all and I have new boots to check out, so still great fun with good snow.

Other closed runs were lighted and there was plenty of snow to open them. Chicken and egg stuff folk, not enough skiers to open more runs, or not enough skiers because runs aren't open. Either case, be honest in your marketing. I also called before going but couldn't get a live person to confirm conditions "check out our website". Bad business folks.
