Cannon Mt. closing day 4/06/03

It's a shame to close with good snow cover top to bottom. It would have been easier to take a week and a half ago, when bare spots covered the mountain. After losing so much of the base to two weeks of rain and unseasonably warm weather, winter came back for an encore since last Sunday.

Monday saw 7"-8" of new snow, and great powder conditions worthy of a sick day. [cell call overheard on the Tram Monday morning: "Hi, Gloria. You didn't forget I was taking a personal day today, did you?"]

A couple more dustings during the week were topped off by an additional 4"-5" or more Saturday morning, and light snow fell right through Sunday morning. I don't know the official snowfall numbers, but you can see the trails are white again!

The Taft Race Course was nicely bumped up over the saddle to Mittersill. North Slope was too thin, a bad choice. Barons Run was thin, but pretty good! I heard Tuckerbrook was skied top to bottom today; not bad for April 6.

On the front five, Avalanche, Paulies and Zoomer were in great shape, with plenty of powder in the bumps early.

Unfortunately the upper mountain had been windscoured, leaving little of the new snow from the past 48 hours on trail. There was a thin line drifted in on skiers left of Vista Way that was nice. Taft Slalom had good cover except at the ledges. The pockets of powder on Profile that looked good from the chair turned out to be hard wind slab - edgeable, but not worth jumping rope. A disappointing change from first tracks under the Profile liftline yesterday morning, when it was 6"-10" of powder. Upper Cannon was good, and there were a few nice powder turns to be had in the trees. Skylight sucked, as it was almost all stripped down to the old icy surface. Upper to Middle Hardscrabble were in great shape.

Cannon should be good to ski top-to-bottom for a week or two, for those willing to hike or skin up. With the extra hour of daylight, I hope to get up there for a run or two after work.

yes yes yes! Cannon was INCREDIBLE on sunday. best all season perhaps out of 7 trips. amazing snow quality, i would rank snow quality as some of the best i've ever skied on some trails.

bumps everywhere, and they were SWEET! front five were all bumped (gary's and rocket had a half groom, excellent! hope they continue that). also bumps on upper/mid hard were soft and delicious. mittersill was a dream... taft was excellent and even though barron's was thin the snow was so sweet.

as Lftgly mentioned, upper mountain was poor overall, but i don't know why they had taft closed! skier's left was dreamy soft snow, and if you stayed left you could avoid the only unskiable section of the trail.

essentially, any trail could have been skied. even the closed one's had enough cover that a die hard could have made it down.

if my company wasn't flying me out to LA this coming weekend, i'd SO be hiking cannon next weekend. no joke, it's almost mid-april and the snow doesn't get much better!

pics and uber long detailed story at:
http://www.netway.com/~theway/ski/2003/cannon2003e.htm

compared to pics from last year's closing date on the same exact day, wow... what a difference!:
http://www.netway.com/~theway/ski/2002/cannon2002b.htm

Wow ! that's a real big difference between last year and now !! especially on Zoomer side. Why they don't remain open one more week, with all that snow ?

Great pics & story at your site, riverCoil! And now the mystery of that green apple under the quad is solved.

thanks Lftgly! you saw that apple?? LFMAO! yea, that was mine. it fell outta my pocket on the way up the quad. granny smiths rule!

frankontour, most ski areas in northern parts of NH, VT, and ME close when there still is lots of snow on the ground. late season skiing isn't very profitable for most ski areas, and they have to fire all their seasonal staff. plus, areas such as cannon need time to transition between winter and summer operations. i wish they would extend the closing date, but that almost never happens around here once a date is set.

Ok, I understand, for the closing date... but it remains really sad, as there is still some great snow ! Here, it's a little bit the same thing for the big ski areas and for the ones owned by american investors. The other stations are less operated for a money objective, so they close with the snow. Then, a big number of ski areas were supposed to close last sunday, but they announced that they would close on april 13 or later, with all the snow they got.

I think there is just "Stoneham" in the big ski areas here that decided to close on april 6. What a shame, they could close in may with no problem, as Ste-Anne, in the same region.

Well, I hope that at least the other ski areas in the region will remain open few more weeks... and that Tuck is gonna be good, after that !

I remember skiing Cannon in April once and having the lift over by Peabody staying open till 5 because of daylightsavings time.
BTW,nice report and pics! Thanks for shareing!
((*
*))NHPH
