OK, I wasn't gonna bother to post a report, but since A-non mentions in the Wildcat thread that Cannon was "fantastic" on Saturday, let's do it:

Although the conditions are slowly improving at Cannon, other than 3 trails they had just opened on man-made (Avalanche, Extesion, Zoomer), the rest of the open trails are still pretty thin, and Cannon is still far short of 100% open.

Upper mountain saw the rope dropped on Vista Way, which they had run a groomer up skiers left; wind blew in some fresh on skiers left as both days progressed, but skiers right was windscoured down to rocks and ice. Very thin, but credit to ski patrol & mngmnt for opening it. Tramway was OK, some rock-hard scratchy stretches in the middle. Upper Cannon holding up well; one bad corner near the top where the groomer scalped it & tilled up the gravel/snow mix. Profile was open, but I didn't ski it; looked like nothing great from the chair. Upper Ravine still had decent cover; again, a few scratchy stretches in the middle (careful when you come around those corners!). They started blowing on Taft Sunday, and are pretty far along making snow on Skylight. Upper Hardscrabble was open, accessed off Upper Ravine at the lower Taft entrance or the next corner; It was OK, but thin.

Middle Hardscrabble was closed; a few pitches had some of the best skiing on the mountain, a couple other pitches were the worst; after some nice dings on my bases, I gave that up for another week. Lower Hardscrabble was closed; they blew some snow at the top entrance late Saturday.

Middle Ravine is holding up well. Big Link had even less on the edges than usual, and was an exercise in staying in control if you got out in the middle - dare I say it was a sheet of ice?. Approaches to the Cannonball quad required great care.

Middle Cannon was OK, though skied off in usual spots; there was some good snow on the edge along the rocks on skiers right.

Paulies Extension was fantastic machine groomed PP both days, as they had just groomed out the whales, and it was still sticking late Sunday.

Ditto for Avalanche - excellent. Groomed 3/4 of the hill, but it's still no SG course. Not much for bumps yet on skiers right, which the groomers left alone, but the rest of the trail was fun.

Same scene on Zoomer - great snow! The groomers left a minefield along skiers right at the edge of the groomed. By sunday, enough skiers had broken it up, that it was safer to venture over there (although pretty thin way over there away from the snow guns).

Rocket was OK. Didn't ski Garys (it was 1/2 open, with either a race or training "in progress" Saturday). The top turns in the Sprocket glade (btw Zoomer & Rocket) were nice, but quickly petered out. Paulies is a minefield at the top where they used the blade to bust up the whale they blew on the crossover to Avalanche, which sent dozens of boulder-sized ice/snow chunks rolling down the slope. One sight of those ended any thought I had of ducking the rope. Banshee/Jaspers were good. Banshee Glade still closed, very thin, I guess it always looks better on the other side of the rope.

cannon should continue to make good snow thru this week.like other areas ive checked fpr hi/lo temps...mostly jay vt-over to berlin nh-to extreme northern main(mars hill)...it will continue to be lows -20 to 15 degrees f most days.again--a lot of peoples response to this is that its bad cause machinery and snow guns break down, freeze up,whatnot.
i think the coldest will be either jan22 or 23,when the thermometer will be at 20 below way up in the northern greens/whites...brian o
