Cannon next weekend, an opinion ?

I see the actual conditions
I see the forecast for the coming days

And I wonder if there is a worth to ski Cannon next weekend ? (especially considering a 4h drive twice)

tough call frank. for me, it's only a 2 hour drive and it's my favorite mountain, so i'm likely to be there regardless. also, since i'm there so often, i don't have your need to hit cannon up when it's excellent conditions.

i have not seen the forecast, but i heard someone mention the R word??? well, suffice to say if that's true it would be a wasted trip. but if cannon gets a half foot of snow it would be worth the drive.

Cannon will be groomers only next weekend. Off piste was sketchy this past weekend and only for the truly adventurous. Even the groomers will have some rough spots after the evil wetness that will be falling from the sky this week (Tues and Fri). We will probably groom as much as we can for Sat so I don't think that the spring bumps will be forming on the front five yet. Bottom Line: Cannon will NOT be at her best this comming weekend. Possibly not the rest of the year unless we get a good hit of spring snow.

Thanks for your sincerity (is it an english word ?)

Anyway, I looked at the situation with my father (who was on the trip) and of course, it doesn't interest him at all anymore to do this trip. I must admit that the only reason why I could come would be to meet the FTO gang, but I guess that considering the conditions, not more than 2-3 (or even less) would be present.

I must face the reality, I will have to pass my tour for this time... just like last year at Whiteface

We're going to see the weather of this week. If it's not too bad, we could go at Orford on sunday. Normally, the people will rest after the holiday week, so it shouldn't be so much crowded. Of course, many trails won't be at their best after the holidays + the bad weather, but with 175" of snow since the beginning of winter, withough too much defrost, it should be enough good. Even the Ecureuil is officially open actually, so it shows how much the mountains has snow (This trail had been open 2 single days for total of 2001-02 and 2002-03)

If someone of you are interested to head north, tell me. We'll confirm this later this week.

Sorry about the conditions.

Mabye another time. It is really ashame that the warm weather had to come so early. Yuck.

porter

Man, you guys are so pessimistic! It ain't over yet. Rain showers in the valleys may well be wet snow on the summits.

At 144.3" to date, Mt Washington has received only 71% of an average seasonal snowfall. But even if we get only 71% of the average (54.1") March snowfall, we're still due for another three feet of snow this month!

I wouldn't rule out skiing Mittersill, Tuckerbrook, glades, etc., until we get a little closer to the weekend.

I made 130' vertical in turns in the woods on a hill behind work during my lunch break yesterday. Although it was 6" deep mashed potatoes & corn, it was still a blast. This weekend could be anywhere between complete mush and rock hard frozen granular, if we get a deep freeze.

The Fairbanks is predicting a chance of rain OR SNOW on Friday.

The sub-zero days of January and February are over, and it sounds like some of you are ready to go play golf, right as the best part of the season starts! I'll check back in a couple days.
