Casino at Tremblant

OK , So I am a self confessed tree hugger and can't stand any trees coming down so this news takes first prize.

Quote from the news.

Plans to build a casino in Mont Tremblant by the summer of 2009 were unveiled yesterday by a coterie of provincial, municipal and Loto-Québec officials gathered in the Laurentian town.

Already an international tourist destination, the $61-million casino slated to be built on Tremblant's south slope will be another reason to head to Tremblant, they said.

The facility's gambling attractions will include 400 slot machines, 20 gaming tables, five electronic Texas Hold 'Em games and a private room for high rollers. It is expected to attract 700,00 visitors a year and generate annual revenues of $50 million.

I'm not sure there are that many trees left to hug in the area.

You already have a major auto-racing track in the vicinity. Why not a casino? I'd rather see development done in density/pockets than a lot of sprawl.

There is a casino in the middle of Chamonix - not really interfering much with the mountaineering/alpine culture.

Since Tremblant is already fubar, I say let them built wathever they want there, and leave other mountains alone !

It'll make it more fun for the little lady though, so I'm not anti it. Although, I would rather go to quebec city than Tremblant.

Well, I could stay there but that takes some dinero. Still, I could always visit it while staying somewhere cheaper, or... win big at the blackjack table.

Certainly no pricier than staying at Tremblant.

You could stay at one of the many inns and B&Bs in Baie St.-Paul and Malbaie, ski Le Massif and Mont Grand-Fonds during the day, and go to the Manoir Richelieu at night. Just pointing out that the potential does exist east of Quebec City.

Admin is correct on this one. Tremblant gets all the attention outside Quebec, but there are many great places that are off radar for many Americans. I guess it's a bit similar to get publicity and attention that Whistler was getting 15-20 years ago in BC. BC was more than Whistler, like Quebec is more than Tremblant.

Regarding the casino at Tremblant, I'll comment later as it's getting late.

Like I said before the idea of Quebec city is more appealing to me. It seems like a more authentic choice. The B&B idea is great, as I've always had fabulous luck with that type of lodging. Maybe next year... although if I'm going to fly for skiing, I would rather go out west, or to europe. Quebec city isn't a realistic option for driving.

Manoir Richelieu was the site of the 2003 NASJA annual meeting. Certainly a nice place. Logistics getting to and from weren't great. Departure buses to Quebec City airport were at like 2AM and 5AM. I would rather be based in Quebec City I think. Distance to Le Massif is about the same. Ste Anne and Massif du Sud are surely superior to Grands-Fonds. Non-ski options have to be better in Quebec City.

As far as Tony's comment about logistics to/from the Manoir Richelieu, I don't think most people who visit Quebec City on a ski trip depend on public transport. Like most places other than the Alps, a rental car is the way to go.

Three years ago, I stayed at a beautiful B&B about 15 minutes north of Le Massif called "Le Cap aux Corbeaux." The views speak for themselves.

Mont Grand Fonds is the local 1,000-footer, but I had a great day there... and I'll never forget the three women working in the admin office there; they must have pulled them from a Victoria's Secret shoot.

The Charlevoix isn't Quebec CIty. Totally different experience (not talking skiing) and ambiance. Plus there is a casino at Manoir Richelieu, I believe this is why Admin mentioned it.
