Community volunteers to reopen Big Tupper

I hope they manage to get Tupper (and Hickory) up and running again, but unless a rich benefactor comes to their rescue, I'm taking the "under."

Edited the link ^^^

Did anyone ski there before it closed? Based on the map, it's more local hill-ish (1,152 vert, but it looks like 800 feet is the most continuous drop you'd get). In any case, it'd be nice to have an extra place in those parts. If Hickory Hill gets up and running, they might have more of a destination region.

Please only link to copyrighted work rather than repost without permission. Thank you! O:)

(BTW I fixed it for ya!)

Any comments on that skimap.gif? Drive times from Albany to Killington 2.5 hours, well over 3 to anything farther north?

The first Ottawa ski show I attended when I moved here (oct 95) had a booth for Tupper and it's didn't sounded like it was within 3 hours from Ottawa. I have a few brochures somewhere around here.

times look to be about 1/2 to 40mins off.. maybe the map was made when the speed limit was 55mph...
Yeah, that looked like an early-70s vintage map, but I liked the format. I agree; the ETAs were at least 30 minutes off with the mark. But how cool would that be to have WF, Gore, Big Tupper, and Hickory open for business? A nice blend of up-to-date and old-school.

My only complaint is that they've updated the rabbit logo... I liked the old one.

I didn't look it up and it's not on their website. What is the vert of this place?

Only places I've been in NY are Titus and WF, Hickory looks old and rustic, I love those places, places where lifts can breakdown, no need to travel to SA for old lifts.

I've skied there during their last season, I believe - check the Eastern resort features. Great little hill! Relatively steep overall but the lack of grooming or snowmaking and the lifts make it tougher than it would otherwise be. Wonderfully retro!

I skied there once during the second-to-last season. I believe the vert is about 1,200. Can't remember how much is continuous, but there are some nicely pitched trails. And yes, like Bobcat in the Catskills, the unpredictable conditions add to the challenge.

This is always exciting for me because old-school ski areas (and I live for them) are the one area where the northeast wins. Unfortunately, making them financially viable is tough.

They had a work day a couple weekends ago

Fall Greetings Fellow Ski Friends,

I have wonderful, and exciting news regarding Hickory Ski Center!

Hickoryskicenter.com

We will be open for operation this winter season with a mountain manager, a trail groomer with all the attachments, repaired lifts, lodge repairs and various other changes. A lot of work has already been completed in preparation of opening, however, we are in need of YOUR assistance in making this long overdue event happen.

On Saturday, September 12th @ 9:00am we will be conducting our seasons first work day. This work day will be in exchange for a voucher for a daily lift ticket or a voucher towards your season pass. The work day will begin at 9:00 and end at 2:00.

You will need to come prepared with work clothes, and gloves, hiking shoes, long pants, and be sure to pack a lunch to enjoy while on the mountain.

If you are interested in offering your time to help rejuvenate and recreate this historic landmark of the Adirondacks, please email our mountain manager, Shawn Dempsey at sdempsey64@gmail.com

We are also looking for experienced as well as inexperienced ski patrollers, if interested, please contact Steve Hoover at hoovers@earthlink.net

Here's picture of the Poma lift. That thing was interesting to ride. I saw many fall on their face trying to get out the gate on it. It would actually pick you up off ground and launch you forward a few feet. That has to be the fasted surface lift I've ever been on

Nevermind. I thought that I did one. I was mistaken. Forum search should yield a writeup, however.

I skied at Big Tupper when I was going to college in Potsdam, NY. On Sunday afternoons we would ski Whiteface for $5 if you could get the ticket people to sell you a Local's Sunday ticket w/o ID. We skied Big Tupper at night. At the time that guy owned it who made his money in Atlantic City gambling, so the story goes. He had a two-tier ticket price. All dat tix were $11.11, night ticket were $7.77. Their lifts sucked. I got stuck on the summit chair and eventually jumped off after getting the OK form the lifty at the top. Between Canton and Potsdam there are four colleges. The only other place to ski at night was Titus. Or Seven Springs, which belonged to the school. I don't remember if St. Lawrence's ski hill was open at night. I never went there.
