New to skiing in Northeast - use to skiing in Aspen. Any advice on if an Oct31 weekend is worth it? And if so, where? My buddy needs to get out of dodge before the man puts him down for good. (I'm serious, fresh out of law school and the firm is draining the life out of him bit by bit - I hear it on the phone....he needs snow!)
I need to get out of Chicago. Advice, would be much appreciated. I'm here for anyone who needs info on anything in IL/WI.

Info on places to stay and generally have a good time also appreciated.

Hi Ethanzelizer !

Ouch... northeast skiing on october 31 weekend, you won't have a lot of choice (especially if you're used to ski Aspen). The only place where you will find correct terrain and great vertical open on october 31 is Killington, in all the northeast. There is surely adequate lodging in the place (I never went), but I wouldn't reserve too fast for lodging, cause in 2001, they only opened on november 6 and there was only something like 500' high open. Last year they opened on october 25 with about 1800' of vertical. Except that, there is only St-Sauveur that could be open, in Quebec (near Montreal), but the side open is just 625' high.

Hey, about your buddy, I understand him !! Max surely too, as we're about to begin our career in a multinational accounting firm... it will be tough for the skiing !

I'm sorry to say that Killington will most likely be the only game in town,if at all. They are looking like they will open top to bottom like last year when they do.They will call it 8 or 9 trails but dont be fooled,it's one top to bottom run.I'm not saying it's not worth it,just buyer beware.I dont know if your bud can hold out but a few weeks can be a big difference.Lodging wont be an issue at all befor the holiday so my advice to you is wait and see what is open, then make your decison accordingly.Give us a trip report after you do go!Good luck!
((*
*))NHPH

You may be in luck for skiing on the 31st of the month. The long range forecast for Killington shows temperatures solidly below freezing at night starting on the 14th of October. I would monitor the long range weather forecast at http://www.accuweather.com by entering Killington's zip code which is 05751. The forecast temperatures are for Rutland which can vary from Killington by 10 degrees or more. Last year Killington began snowmaking on the 19th of October and opened for the season on the 25th. An early season weekend would most likely be VERY crowded if there is limited open terain.

Yep, I guess it's the same thing everywhere, in early season !

Last year on the 1st saturday of the season, there was just the Nordique open, at St-Sauveur. It was extremely crowded. A chance for me, they blew snow all the morning in the West 70, so it wasn't open and was very scratchy to enter in it, but in the afternoon, there was more people in the West 70 than in the Nordique and it saved the day !!

would you think this trail was closed, with almost no snow to reach it ?
