ONE MORE WEEK!!!

Belleayre is expected to receive 30" or more of snow in the next 24 hours.

We will remain open through Sunday, April 22! Only the upper mountain will be open (the Super Chief and the Tomahawk Lifts).

Thanks James, I haven't add time to check or make an update. I just got back to a computer now after a day in a storm at WF on Sunday and a loooong detour toward Montreal. Long story to follow in a Wf report.

Whiteface is also opening next weekend (fri to Sun). I need to get to work this morning after having missed yesterday. Yes, I think that I can definitely say that I encountered the Worst Winter Driving conditions on Sunday. WF-Ottawa is normally 3 hours. It took me 6 hours to make it Montreal (which is generally less than 2 hours) Yes, it includes accidents, Snowstorm, road closure, back tracking, supper in Plattsburgh (no choice with a Kid in the car), 40 minutes wait at the border and ...the piece de resistance... a 30-40kmh drive on a unplowed autoroute 15 all the way to Montreal.

Okay, after being closed for two weeks, Le Massif decided to join in the fun in late April skiing. Good to see that some areas are putting the skiing back as a priority. Keep up the good work.

There is hope for the ski industry after all.

That's pretty impressive. I assume the last season the Northeast had that many late April closings was in 2000-01.

Anyone have a list of who closed when for that spring?

Alta ( Quebec ) just might make it for another weekend ( Sat . April 21) . All depends on what happens the next few days . I imagine it must be some type of record opening this late with no artificial snow base.

Okay, now Sugarloaf is pushing it's season to April 29th. :D

List above just updated.

http://www.sugarloaf.com/media.html?id=1262&nobar=1

95 inches of snow in April makes conditions ?too good to close?

Record April snowfall totaling 95 inches, including 3.5 feet this week, has prompted Sugarloaf/USA to extend the skiing and riding season one week. The resort?s new final day of lift service will be Sunday, Apr. 29.

?With this much snow, the skiing and riding is just too good to close,? said Sugarloaf?s President John Diller. ?Sugarloaf is renowned for some of the finest spring skiing in the industry and this year is going to be something Sugarloafers will remember for years to come.?

As of Wednesday, Apr. 18, all of Sugarloaf?s 134 trails are open, including the fabled Backside and Frontside Snowfields, glades, and trails with base depths exceeding 4 feet in many places.

?All this snow is reason to celebrate and we know of no better way than to get out and enjoy it on the slopes of Sugarloaf,? Diller said. In addition to copious amounts of snow, this weekend?s weather forecast is near ideal for spring skiing and riding. Sugarloaf?s forecast calls for sunny skies and base temperatures in the low 50s both days.

From Apr. 23-29, lift service will be provided by the SuperQuad and the Timberline chairlifts to offer access to all of Sugarloaf?s terrain. Grooming will be limited on weekdays and recommended for skiers and riders who are comfortable navigating Sugarloaf?s blue square and black diamond terrain.

I don't think so Anthony. I believe that Le Valinouet (in the Saguenay region) and Val d'Irène (Gaspe Peninsula) also do not have any artificial snow and are also set to make it to this weekend, however snow accumulation is greater than in the Laurentians and they are less subject to warm weather than Southern Quebec.

Plus if you remember 20-25 years ago, skiing in late April wasn't as rare back then in Quebec or elsewhere.

I probably keep track of it, but I never kept the information. Maybe Frankontour kept records of stuff back then?

There might be something in the hyperspace like on rec.skiing about late closing in the East in the early 90s. I would generally keep track of it back then for my late season skiing options.

For historical info on the 2001 late season in the East, I'd recommend looking here: http://216.250.243.13/discus2/messages/ ... 1057871629

Weather-wise I recall that Vermont's April that year was like a typical Sierra spring: warm, clear and mostly dry. The deep base from the epic March lasted all April with the consistent spring skiing that we take for granted out here.

From what I've read in general, I think it's probably worth the schlep to Sugarloaf for some of you easterners the next 2 weekends.

I've been to Sugarloaf a few times in the past on their last days of the seasons, never dissapointed by the mountain and the coverage.

For this weekend, the backside open which would be an additional bonus.

If I would be 125 miles closer (ie. Montreal), Sugarloaf would be my #1 choice for the weekend, however i'll be returning to Whiteface on Sunday with my daughter as this will be my last day drive weekend from Ottawa, the next weekends I'll have to travel to Montreal if I want to continue skiing.

Sunday River is the 29th know and its the traditional last (ski Free) day.

The traditional thing was Ski Maynia, with free skiing on May 1st...after that there would apply to the weekend prior to it (regardless of when the season would end). Lately, May 1st (or weekend prior) became also the Last day of the season.

List has been updated with this information and some of the other confirmations.

It's tough to have spring skiing when winter refuses to end.
We have had a few of those seasons, most recently last year, as I recall particularly from admin's reports. Before the snow could consolidate into a good spring surface, the next storm would hit. Depending upon the temps over the next couple of weeks, next weekend could be better spring skiing (go for it, Patrick, and take Morgane with you) than this weekend in the East. You want it to either stay cold or clear up to get a consistent melt/freeze going. Sugarloaf snowfields might be in a similar situation to the backside of Mt. Bachelor last Sunday.

As mentioned elsewhere...

I would just need to get her out of her music lesson on Saturday and go to visit grandma in Montreal on weekends. :-({|= :-$

So the only option to ski with Morgane would be Whiteface on Sunday. I need 2 day weekend to consider Sugarloaf. Unfortunately I need to choose my weekend out-of-town carefully (home issues  ), last weekend I choose WF over Saddleback. And after this weekend, I'll have to leave town to continue my ski season as no day drive option from Ottawa will remain.

PS. Not sure what you're talking about Tony? Last Sunday was pretty amazing...powder and slides. I just need to write it up. Not tonight, I'm going to the Canadian Ski Museum dinner.

I think its 3 years know since the last day at Sunday River has been May 1st.
Last year the plan was to do the free day the 1st Sat in May. It ended up being April 17th a monday I think.

As of 2 pm yesterday guest service was saying on the phone the 22nd would be the last day. Sunday being the free day.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't aware of the last day being free day at Sunday River, I was aware of the May 1st free day, because I've been at SR on many May 1st in the past. Most of those years, the season at SR lasted until the mid-late May (if not June in one year).

Update on the spreedsheet.

Wildcat also extends till April 29th. :P

Alta ( Quebec ) ran out of snow and has now closed for the season . Sutton is still going strong and their webpage is offering 25% off adult lift tickets.

Last weekend was still winter. April 29-30 should be settled spring snow, and at Sugarloaf I'd presume coverage will not be an issue. This weekend will be in the transitional stage, might be good, might be mashed potatoes. I do lots of spring skiing, and I still find the transitional stage to be unpredictable.

You need to move Morgane's music lessons to midweek after school, at least by next season. I presume she would be amenable to that change  .

Thanks Anthony for the upsdate regarding Mont ALta.

Alas, this isn't possible. Harp lessons (not very common) are only given on Saturdays.

I knew that this spelled trouble when my wife started and then my daughter started a Saturday activites a few years back. I guess I need to compromise sometimes. :?

This looks like the last weekend in almost all ski areas in the East with the exception of one.

As Mont Sutton has just confirmed that Sunday will be their last day and Mont Comi confirmed that there will not reopen this weekend. The May possibilities for Jay and Sugarbush have been abandonned. Killington will regain it's title, last one to close in the East (Last year Bretton Woods closed 4 days later on May 5th).

Weather forecast for the weekend isn't great, but get out if you can.

*seems like May isn't a possibility for them anymore.

St-Sauveur isn't going to open this weekend, but their website mentioned that it's possible that they will reopen next weekend if the weather permits.

Last Update : 04-27-07, 02:17 PM

Dear customers,
Please note that Mont Saint-Sauveur will be closed this week-end due to the atmospheric conditions.

We wish that Mother Nature will wear her nicest suit for next weekend by sending us lots of sunshine. In facts we guarantee that we will be open next Saturday and Sunday.

Until then, have a nice week!

Okay, this is news!!! In the French message they actually talk about May 5-6.

So next week, they might be two possibilities. The List has been updated.
