Eastern Skis: your powder weapon of choice...

I'm 5'10" 165, and my BC/pow ride is 8800's with Freerides. Although I did rent a pair of Salomon X-Wing Tornado's in Breck earlier this season. I loved 'em in the pow, but they were a bit chattery on the firm. They were 160-somethings, and I think they would be fine at 175 or so for my style.

5'11, 190lbs. Been using a pair of 176 Atomic Stomps (88 waisted) with Fritschis. They are about wrecked. Good dimensions for very tight eastern glades with lots of snow. They aren't really long enough for real big lines.

Been looking into buying skis in the next few weeks. The three models I've been looking at are: 186 Legend Pros, 189 Seth's, 184 Mantras... Probably put vice grips on them as opposed to AT binders.

Too many i can't remember. :D
O the list is coming back to my mind
Volkl Explosiv 2002: 1,80m
Volkl Explosiv Wizard 2003: 1,73m
Salomon Pocket Rocks 2001 1,76m. No very useful.
Volant Chubb 2001 87mm at center.
Volant Spats: why did I buy this??
Bandt XXX: love cruising at Mont-Ste-Anne these ones!

More recent additions:
Line Elizabeth sexy logo 1,72m 2007
Voile Insane 2006 not built yet!
Volkl Sumo: 125 mm in the middle 1,76m. great skis!

Did i forget something?

Yes!
The best of the best: DB Tabla Rasa 2005. Swallow tail. Carbon core very light!
Soon: Atomic Thug 2006...waiting delivery.
No I have to ski Eastern pow but where is it??

i'd like to see what other people are riding on these days... especially your woods/powder/backcountry setups. i've seen fellas up at stowe/jay/bush with full-on 100+ underfoot boards.
so what have you?

About 280 underfoot - called a Burton Fish.

6'0" @ 160lbs

I own a pair. Good all-mountain ski? Absolutely. Powder ski? No way. The way they submarine makes the USS Nautilus seem like a hovercraft.

6' 0", 205lb, after demoing numerous skiis last year I settled on Atomic Metron B5. These skiis have handled everything from powder to slush, soft snow to boilerplate, great in tight trees, super quick and responsive. The only thing they don't like to do is go straight.

i believe it. i never skiied out west so i don't really know what powder skiing is like, but last year i skiied at tremblant in a foot of snow. yes. i agree with you. it's not exactly a floater...

My powder B/C setup are the Blue Noodles AKA Salomon Pocket Rockets in a 165cm w/a Fritschi AT binder and I looooooooove em! One of the reasons I love them so much is how light they are for skinning! It's like they're not even there.

I keep them in reserve for powder days and touring. They are fairly versitle but I use my Blizzard X-Cross' for everyday use.

Not to sound like I'm beating you up on your first two posts, gladerider, but there's plenty of powder to be found in the East. You just have to look a little harder to find it.

My BC set up of choice is the BD Verdict in a 180cm mounted with Hammerheads of course. Great float in the deep stuff with a 99mm waist, but yet fairly light for skinning to my favorite powder stashes on Big Jay and surrounding mountains. I really wanted to try the G3 Rapid Transit which i had three pair here at the shop but sold them all before i could slap a binding on them. All three guys that bought them say they are awsome. I have a pair of 171cm left but i think they would be to short for me at 5'11". Oh well the Verdicts have treated me well over the last year or so.

Bring on the deep stuff.

I just bought a pair of 190 Verdicts yesterday at an unbeatable price. I probably wont put AT binders on them as I have been having some problems clamping my feet to my skis with fritschis. I feel like I may just be skiing the skis to fiercely for those binders. They'll probably end up with Fischer x 17's...

I'd like to hear more about your experience with the Verdicts...

Here are some pics of them in action on a great mid week day last season in the Dip at Jay.

hey first trax-
in your shop at jay they have a pair of prophet 130's for sale. your shopgirl said she knew someone who skied on those things everyday. found that hard to believe (well, just didn't make to me)

at sugarbush, a guy in a shop their was telling me his whole crew of employees skied dynastar legend pro's everyday all the time.

if so, do guys (and gals) do this as a form of training/staying on top of a big ski so when there is powder, they're not saying to themselves "holy $h#t, this is a damn big ski" ?

or are they just trying to look cool? ha

Until you buy one of my skis....yes!
My dresses are complaining, too much skis in the wardrobe.

Idon't uderstand that Pat is stick to one pair of race skis. 2000cm or something? Hard core "nostalgic historian" Glen Plake himself put his old 215 cm skis to the garbage.

By the way I love my Spademan bindings!!

One pair???

Okay, none of these are powder skis. I just don't have the money to spend on an extra pair of skis, travelling and skiing out West now and then.

Rossignol B1 - 176cm - My choice ski for anything that isn't groomed and icy. (1st season: 2004-05) - Ski with the most days on them in my current active list. This ski generally fit what type of skiing I do most of the time from skiing with my daughter, to skiing over icefall at MRG.

Races skis:

Atomic SL11 (slalom ski) - 157cm - Unfortunately this ski is illegal for running slalom under FIS rules. (1st season: 2003-04).

Atomic Beta Race 10:22 (GS ski) - 183cm (1st season: 2001-02)- Oldest of my non-straight skis. These should be replaced. I've ski powder out West (2002) and in Alps (2003) with them when they were my only good pair. So you comment, you apply to me 4-5 years ago.

Ah yes, I also a few pais of straight skis in my basement. All above 200cm, not used in the past few years except here...Last October report at Jay.

You can find the rest of my ski found in my basement in this discussion.

I never asked how long his (Glen Plake) current ski were. I can tell you that they probably above 190cm last July.

To summarize:

My Priority list for new skis: Replacing the B1 and getting a new GS ski. Unfortunately a Powder ski would be on the list after replacing my slaloms.

I can survive on my B1 in Powder, they're not the best, but they'll have to do. Check my avatar.

I believe this is true for the vast majority of eastern skiers. If you want to be one of the exceptions, keep reading reports here from powderfreak and others.

I had the argument with Patrick last year about his skis. His technical ability is such that he was just fine on that epic powder day in Jackson on the B1's. But like Plake, just because you have the ability to do it on less than ideal equipment doesn't mean you should. I think the new K2 Recons I bought are a good example of the versatility of the best modern designs. They turn quick and will blast down firm packed groomers at high speed. Yet at 78mm underfoot they must be a lot better for powder and crud than something like the B1.

Patrick has enough race skis. His next ski should be wider, and it will still work just fine as an "all mountain ski," even in the East.

Hey First Trax, I need a new powder ski to mount on my new freerides, something like 90 to 100 under foot. What do ya got for me?
