Enough is Enough

Woke this morning to heavy rain and temps in the 50's
Also to a gallon of paint and a living room crying for it

The unpleasant truth:

For us to ski on proper conditions on a mostly consistent basis, we'll have to sack up and do what Admin did -- move to CO or UT -- or keep quiet and suffer in silence. Low altitude's going to kill us one way or another. Even places like Mammoth aren't immune from this season's market correction... when Tony is advising people not to book there for January, things are bad.

I still expect Mammoth to have a consistent 4 month season from mid-January to mid-May. It's only one ordinary 2-3 foot Sierra dump away from being 80-90% open. The key is that Mammoth conditions do not regress until mid-April. You just have to wait until the base gets up to 4-5 feet, normally meaning about 100 inches of snowfall.

Since I'm driving, have a pass and reasonably priced lodging connection at Mammoth, I will still go up there in 2 weeks. But if you're shelling out airfare $ from across the country, I recommend a margin of error and defer to February, or to be most safe March. Year in and year out, I'll take Mammoth's snow reliability and length of season over anything in Colorado. The catch of course is that I'm weekend distance and not daytrip distance from Mammoth.

With regard to relocating, SLC is the clear #1 choice of a metro area if skiing is the sole criterion. But even a mediocre ski location like L.A. is better than anywhere in the East. I repeat the recommendation that for you New Englanders I think the Pacific Northwest is the closest cultural/lifestyle fit. And unlike transplanted Californians, I don't see New Englanders complaining about Seattle/Portland weather.

a lot of northern vermont mountains are only an ordinary one foot dump from being 80-90% open.

things will come around in the east. like last season, this may be yet another season of the opportunist.

It's funny - before 12/26 I'd only skied one day, and now I'm up to 7 total days. I skied at Gore all week and while terrain was limited, the conditions were pretty darn ok. On NY Eve - we went to Vt, and I found some time to do some xc skiing and then climb up a haying field and cut a few turns there.

Came home last night after the Fzra.

My attitude is really different. Yea I know it still stinks and the planet is hosed.

The skiing really made me feel better.

Nice job Gore.

I guess you didn't see this weeks forecast yet?

Not sure what it has for Vermont, but +10c and rain here on Friday isn't good. :x

I skied spring like conditions in Bromont yesterday. Today I'm going mountain biking in Rougemont. The earth is gone crazy :x Happy new year and wish for snow!

a lot of northern vermont mountains are only an ordinary one foot dump from being 80-90% open.
And after that only one ordinary rainstorm from skiing like crap again. 75% of Mammoth seasons are better than a great New England season like 2000-01.

You know I was going to object to that statement. Not better, different.

This being said, we are having the worst season that I can recall, if it is a reflection of what climat change and Eastern Winters will tend to look like more and more then it become another debate.

hey hey hey, i wasn't trying to compare east to west with my previous statement. just saying that many areas in new england are that one standard dump for the region away from opening up lots of terrain just like mammoth is one standard dump for that region away. the R word is not appreciated ;) but you are correct that some terrain can easly shut back down pending bad weather.

Ok, I'll follow jamesdeluxe lead and suffer in silence and resign myself to start the count down, 25 days til Panorama, 55 days til Utah

That's why I did not mention differences in scale or terrain, only weather/conditions. But I think we can all agree that an average 5 month ski season with reasonable conditions and percents of terrain open is better than an average 3 month ski season.

If you are strictly comparing season lenght, then yes, Mammoth is better. However you could also say that Timberline's season is longer than Mammoth, however I don't think it would necessarily mean better?

Mammoth is better than Timberline due to quantity and quality of terrain. I don't think you want to go there... :P

Doesn't the Canadian government need any geographers in Vancouver or Calgary?

Our forecast high temp for tomorrow is 70 degrees. I give up...
i was going to mention that yesterday... but i was told to suffer in silence :(
but on the up side.. there will be a south west breeze .. i am thinking about breaking out my windsurfing gear and heading down to seaside

24 hours till I climb Tuckerman for the field day for my Avy 1 class. I guess I can leave the ultra-cold weather gear in the truck...
