Has anyone here gone on a train-based trip where the itinerary wasn't overly inconvenient (no more than one change) while schlepping a heavy ski bag and a boot bag?
One bus, two high speed trains, two local trains in 14 hours from Hakuba to Niseko with ski bag, 73lb suitcase (I had spent a week diving in Palau first) and backpack, how does that sound?

Gah. I've mentioned before that the only non-rental-car destination trip that I've done was Munich to Galtür near Ischgl:
S-Bahn from the airport to Munich central train station: transfer to train
Munich train station to Kufstein: transfer trains
Kufstein to Landeck: transfer to bus
Landeck to Galtür
The upside was enjoying the scenery from the train; the downside was transferring the ski and boot bags three times. As I recall, it's approx. 3.5 to 4 hours with both forms of travel: car or train. While I'm physically capable of doing the public-transport version again, the "I'm getting too old for this crap" phase of my life is in sight.
