Fritschi Diamir Freeride

Get 'em. I've been looking for deals on them for a while. I wish I had jumped on a pair when Backcountrystore.com had a deal last spring...$199 for the suckers. I'm really kicking myself now.

-Scott

ps: i've heard nothing but rave reviews as well from people with 100 day seasons on them.

i did a little searching around for some skins for my split. i checked out everything i could find. it turns out that only two pairs of skins work for my split(burton and voile). i went with voile cause i've heard that they stand up to the abuse that anyone can give 'em for 4+yrs. acsension makes the voile skins, and from what i've heard from people in shops, reviews and word of mouth they sound like the choice to go with. i was also looking at some BCA(backcountry access) low fat deluxe skins. they have the rubber tip with the hook attached to that. they're probably worth checking out. those were some of my findings as i did some research for skins this yr. good luck.

Scott,I saw them last year on that site too for the closeout.Other sites had them reduced as well.As I understand it,they have beefed up the toe for this years model.I'm curious if this is just cosmetic or if indeed there is a practical reason for it because i've heard of skiers being wary of the rather lean looking toepiece.
Thanks Hamdog for your advice on skins.I like your username, why did you choose it?
I like the fact that the FTO forum has some creative usernames instead of "Skibum90875".Frank,are you really "on tour" or is that your name?Cool anyhow.
Thanks guys and keep the advice coming.
((*
*))NHPH

ok guys, hello, my name is Les. I've been trying to get registered for FTO but I dont know what to do. I am tuckskier12583 on Rsn forum, and I have spoken with NHPH. Its good to see some friendly faces here. I just discovered this forum a couple of weeks ago and I love it. Is anyone planning to ski this weekend? What would probably be a good bet in VT/NH? I go to college in MD, but I am from CT and am moving back this winter(and going home tomorrow). I can't believe that Jay Peak is opening as late as Wisp@ Deep Creek here in W. MD. That's ridiculous. Jay has also already received about 1/3 or so of the snow that they have YEARLY at WISP!!!!! Anyway, let me know what you guys think.
~Les

ha ha. ya. my name was just kinda given to me in high school. you're the first person to ask such a thing. i was kind of a partier in h.s., so i got hammered and lit a lot. this one time when we were out someone told me i was wicked 'hamdogged'. from then on, we'd always say, hey, let's go get 'hamdogged' this w/end. it was kind of a patern for us to get 'hamdogged' every w/end. so if you know anyone who has a nickname followed by 'dog'.......that's the original story where it came from(at least my 'dog' nickname). oh, and my last name starts w/ 'ham...'

NHPH-
Yes, I think that's the AT binding to buy - I put my $$ where my mouth is, and ordered a pair at IME in No. Conway 2 weeks ago. They had sold out, but have more coming in, (but they haven't come in yet).

I've had a pair of the DiamirII for two seasons and I'm really happy with them. I bought another pair of fatter skis, and needed another set of AT bindings.

There are only minor differences between the latest model DiamirIII and the Freeride. I almost bought the Diamir III because they are lower weight, but the extra ounces on the Freeride is mostly the ski brake; after you add the weight & cost of the ski brakes, the Diamir's are about the same. I don't need the Freeride's higher DIN, I'm usually at 6-7. All else being the same, I went with the Freeride on Rick's advice.
The ski brake is the one caveat with the Freeride "out of the box"; although you can order the Freeride in different "sizes" for different boot sole lengths, they all come with the standard width brakes.

The brakes are identical to the Diamir, and can be swapped with the wide model, which is what you need for 90MM wide fat skis.

Here's the breakdown for sizing the brakes, per Tommy at BlackDiamondequipment.com.

Small----up to 72mm
Medium(STD)---73-86mm
Large(Wide)----87-100mm

If you plan to mount 'em on a ski wider than 86mm, then check with skiershop.com before you buy & ask if they will make the swap at no cost to you.

The Freerides were about $285 at IME (same list price as skiershop.com), but Rick threw in the mounting (skis I bought elsewhere), and swapping out the standard brakes for wide brakes at no charge. You're in NH, give them a call at 603-356-6316, they're great people! Ask for Rick or Brett.

Skins are another whole thread. I bought a new pair at IME for my new fatties, but the jury is still out until I try them. I already know the toe clip sucks, and will require some "customizing" to get them to stay on the PocketRockets wide rounded tips. I guess the big question these days is whether to buy skins extra wide and cut them to fit shaped skis, or just buy "old school" straight skins. There are pros & cons to both; I'll let you know later this season if I think the tailored skins are worth the extra money & hassles.

Lftgly,I saw the Freeride at Ragged Mountain Sports a couple weeks ago if you are in a hurry.By Rick do you mean Mr. Wilcox?I saw his slide show on his Everest summit back in the early 90's.That was one of the best things I ever did.One detail that still sticks in my mind is he said that they use the dead frozen bodies on the mountain as a timeline ie;If you leave camp 4 at midnight and dont reach dead NHPH below the Hillary Step by 5am then you know you wont have enough time to summit and return to camp 4 before dark.Sobering.
((*
*))NHPH

TY, NHPH. Fritsche bindings are now in stock at IME.
My skis are ready to pick up, now all we need is snow.

What the f happened? October's Mt. W. snowfall was nearly 200% of normal; with two days left in this month, Mt. W. has received only 31% of a normal November. I pray the summits get hammered with snow tonight, though there's not much hope in the forecast for anything but rain & ice in the valleys.

Yes, IME & Ragged had them in stock yesterday.

I stopped at Ragged, and picked up the Black Diamond STS Tip Loop 83mm BD163623 there ($4.50), which is the perfect replacement tip loop for the G3 skins to fit the Salomon PocketRockets with the rounded tips.
