Any bets on whether Killington is going to do the annual "blow out the cobwebs" marketing tactic by laying down some manmde for a photo opp?

As of last night lots of things happened (to put it descretely):

Loveland started full time snow making: http://www.skiloveland.com/cam.html the guns were blowing as of 7 am mountain time

A-Basin Started last night as well, stay tuned for pictures:

Mount Washington is down to a healthy 15 degrees this morning with the first flakes of the season!! http://www.mountwashington.org/cam/index.php

Looks to me as Big K or another higher altitude ski area could have blown snow last night in New England, it really is ashame that they waste these types of chances.

I think we should start counting how many times they don't use their reasources properly in opening this season, hell killington is still running their gondola for leaf peepers, couldn't they just sneak a few skiers on as well.

Blown opportunity number 1 in my book.

I think tonight will be a better opportunity for K to blow snow. Don't expect that it'll be in order to open though; more for marketing hype and photo opps (the annual blow out the mice routine). K now has a policy of only opening to the public if they can offer top-to-bottom, something I don't think they can do in a couple of nights with warm temps during the day. Give 'em a few more weeks.

BTW, no frost in Litchfield County last night - too windy I think. We're under a freeze warning tonight though... :D

I am not going to comment on Killington!!! In the past, they would jump for the making snow and open early, even if it would melt a few days later.

Yeck, someone could've made snow on my street in Ottawa this morning, imagine in the country. It was still -1c (31f) at 7am, it was up to 3c (37f) at 9am.

Man, do I love that wonderful Winter smell in the morning. :D

There's no point in bashing Killington for not blowing. It's going to be well into the 60's at the summits there later this week.

There might be a minor cold shot around the 12th but the next big cold air breakout looks to be around the 16th. I wouldn't hold my breath for either one of those either.

my opinion is more worthwihile skiing would be had if the areas all just agreed not to open till thanksgiving, stockpile the base during november with the fake and not piss it away so early, and stay open later in april and may... if it was ridiculous and there was a ton of natural snow from the sky, then sure open it up... but to blow snow that has any reasonable chance of melting away, jsut to open " early" is just dumb... this race to slide around on flattened ice chips is just stupid if it comes at the expense of skiing when it is 50 F out in april and may

Joe-
Make that November 1, and I might agree with you. Year after year I've had very enjoyable early season skiing on Veterans day and earlier at various mountains, including K*********.

I've made the argument in this space before that "economic development" in the North Country requires ski areas to try to make something of the "mud" seasons after-foliage-before-Thanksgiving and after-April-Fools-before-Mothers-Day.

After following leaf-peepers around going 20 MPH under the speed limit for the last week, I will appreciate the lack of tourists in the North Country as much as anyone in another couple weeks. But I also will have to get to the grocery store earlier with "fall hours" and make sure my favorite restaurant hasn't closed before I go out to dinner on a weeknight.

Yeah, the mountain might "lose money" on day ticket sales in November compared to November operating costs, but the restaurants and hotel rooms would otherwise be empty. The big ski areas make as much or more on concessions and real estate, as they do on ski ticket sales. And they pump money into the entire region's economy when they are open.

I bought my Cannon season ticket yesterday, and expect to ski 3-4 times at BW before Cannon's 11/26 opening day. God bless Wayne Presby & partners.

"Frost advisory" may not be good enough for sustained snowmaking, but it's a welcome sign of good times to come!

Chromer, I wasn't bashing Killington about not making snow early, it was just a stated fact that in the past then would blow snow at the first opportunity and hoping to get to open for a few hours before it melted all away.

I agreed which Joe that I would which they would put more effort in closing late, instead of the madness of early season skiing on bad conditions and full season prices.

But the logic was more driven by the 'market' (ie. it's cold outside, I want to ski and it's warm outside, skiing is over attitude). Plus like Lftgly says, need to get people to the mountain in November after the leaves are over.

I took care of it. Be mindful of that, folks! bbCode tags for this and other things are right above the text entry window when typing a post.
