Joe-
Make that November 1, and I might agree with you. Year after year I've had very enjoyable early season skiing on Veterans day and earlier at various mountains, including K*********.
I've made the argument in this space before that "economic development" in the North Country requires ski areas to try to make something of the "mud" seasons after-foliage-before-Thanksgiving and after-April-Fools-before-Mothers-Day.
After following leaf-peepers around going 20 MPH under the speed limit for the last week, I will appreciate the lack of tourists in the North Country as much as anyone in another couple weeks. But I also will have to get to the grocery store earlier with "fall hours" and make sure my favorite restaurant hasn't closed before I go out to dinner on a weeknight.
Yeah, the mountain might "lose money" on day ticket sales in November compared to November operating costs, but the restaurants and hotel rooms would otherwise be empty. The big ski areas make as much or more on concessions and real estate, as they do on ski ticket sales. And they pump money into the entire region's economy when they are open.
I bought my Cannon season ticket yesterday, and expect to ski 3-4 times at BW before Cannon's 11/26 opening day. God bless Wayne Presby & partners.
"Frost advisory" may not be good enough for sustained snowmaking, but it's a welcome sign of good times to come!
