Here is some pics of saturday at Le Valinouet, in the Saguenay Lac St-Jean region (In Quebec)

The ski area is open for FREE on saturday and it's the last day of the season (due to lack of crowd... even though they don't have snowmaking. The patrollers say that it's still skiable on mid-june over there.

Unfortunately I can't go this weekend once again cause of "the" test on monday

Those pics are from saturday april 24.

Here is the link for the whole report and pics (for saturday)

april 24

And sunday. I actually begin to wonder if the Valinouet will be skiable longer than Tuckerman Ravine this year !?

A man there told Richard (zoneskier who was there last weekend) that the main trails are skiable up to mid-june generally !! (and top to bottom (900 feet high on this side) until early June)

Looking to the actual conditions of Tuckerman Ravine, I'm doubtful that it stays nicely skiable 1½ month again.

But damn the Vali is far, though !

Yeah, me too somehow.

We generally pass by La Malbaie to go in the far north, so from there to the Valinouet, we talk of about 2h30-2h45. Possible to do it in a single day for us, but it's still 4h to reach La Malbaie from Montreal.

I wonder how much snow remain in the glades of the Massif du Sud. It's not impossible that we replace the trip planned to Killington to ski the MDS instead. We even think about skiing both Massifs in the same day. It would be crazy, though, with 2 hours drive between them.

Nothing is sure actually !

Wow, those trees look most spectacular.

I was investigating how long of a drive it would take for me to get up there and it is at least 6 to 7 hours speeding like crazy. I sure wish I could finagle a way to get up there. Looks like a lot of fun.

Does anyone know where I could get more information on the Gaspe, I was thinking of going up there for memorial day weekend. Late may. Just wondering.

As for next weekend I am thinking of skiing on Mt. Washington somewhere but not sure where. This summer I might be interning up there, so I figured I should explore it some more.

Porter

You're talking about heading northeast from Québec City to Malbaie, then northwest to get to Chicoutimi. You can instead take a straight line due north from Québec to Chicoutimi by following 73 straight past Stoneham where it turns into the 175 all the way to Chicoutimi. Take a look at this map:

On this map, the route that I'm describing is in purple. Your route follows the 138 northeast along the river to Malbaie, then northwest along the 170 to Chicoutimi.

It's only 124 miles (200 km) from Québec to Chicoutimi via the purple route, and it's a fast road as long as the weather cooperates -- it travels through the middle of freakin' nowhere, as opposed to the route that you're describing which travels through a number of small towns that do nothing but slow you down. I've done it myself in about 1 hour 45 minutes from Québec to Chicoutimi. At that to, say, 2 hours 45 minutes from Montréal to Québec via the 20, and you're talking a total of 4.5 hours from Montréal to Chicoutimi -- not that far at all. You could easily drive to Chicoutimi on a Friday evening, leaving Montréal at 6 and arriving in Chicoutimi by 10:30, then get up in the morning and ski. Doesn't sound so bad, now, does it?

wow frank those trees look incredible! sweet corn in the trees. how far from nyc?? probably too far. guess i'm destined to ski killington again this weekend. oh well it's still skiing.

Marc, your travel road doesn't consider that my girlfriend has a house at La Malbaie

It's why we pass by there and it's why I skied mt Édouard twice and Mt Grand-Fonds in the last month !

Effectively, from NYC, we talk of 12h or road (ish !!!) but it's still in the East

And anyway, who's not IN for a 12h road trip in june to ski 900' high on nice corn

It is very tough to get some good information for the Gaspe area. There is the Chic-Choc avalanche center that you can find online (sorry I don't have the link here)

Now I have the link :

http://www.centreavalanche.qc.ca/

You can also see a report from Jolly J on TimeforTuckerman... looks like it's not the best year to ski the Chic-Chocs

http://timefortuckerman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2171

In winter, there is some expeditions starting from Vermont ;)

http://www.otloose.com/what_we_do/chic_choc.html

Except that, even in french, there is something like no information available about this paradise land.

You can still check the report of Wolverine on Zoneski, from march 24-31 1996, with pics (and an impressive memory from Wolverine)

http://zoneski.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=490

To get the translation :

http://babelfish.altavista.com/

God, they're still open at 100% today (but only the main side is open), but it's the last day of the season.

They say they have almost no bare spots on the whole mountain.

It's possible that we head there next week, for some hike & skiing. But damn it's sooooo far !

I'm eager to see some pics of the glades this weekend. The guy who went last week has become a maniac of the mountain in a single weekend there, so he's back this weekend.
