Great Gulf, Mt Washington, 3/4/03

Does anyone know if there is enough snow to ski the great gulf yet? Has anyone skied up there in winter? Headed up Sunday, but due to low viz and wind, ended up shredding elsewhere. I am pretty sure know one had been hiking the Jewell trail judging by the horrendous boot packing. Ah but some secrets are best left unsaid.

Johnny- Good question, I'm thinking along the same lines. Fortunately, yesterday's rain event in the valleys remained all snow at the summit of Mt.W.
Unfortunately, lower summits, like 4000' Cannon, got some rain before it changed back to snow. There was a good couple inches of fresh on top of Cannon this morning, though it was blown off exposed windward slopes. Under this new fluff, it was pretty much rock-hard. In my opinion, the Great Gulf will be great if we hit it on a day this month that warms up enough to soften the surface into edgeable corn. Otherwise, it's either avalanche potential (new powder on old hard surfaces), or just plain rock-hard old surface.

Check the online Avalanche advisory from the USFS snow rangers in Tucks to get an idea of what's happening in the Presidentials:
http://www.mountwashington.org/avalanche/index.html

I also find the reports of conditions & snow depths at the cabins useful:
http://www.mountwashington.org/backcountry/index.html

Watch the weather and pray for either a Noreaster to dump snow heavy enough to stick to old surface, or a warm enough day for Spring conditions.

Here's a reconnaissance photo for you:

Taken a week and a half ago, 2/26/03.

Looking good!

Lookin' good is right, hoping to check it out this weekend with the "forecasted" warmer temps. soon enough I would guess. In the mean time, the powder skiing was pretty good sunday. I'd say 8 inches new up in smugglers notch(not the ski area), and only had to share the tracks with my dog (and he doesn't mind skiing second If you have never skied there, it may be worth an exploratory mission sometime.
