Greek Peak 1/2/06

Today was even better than yesterday!

I spent the first 2 hours on the green circle trails teaching my friend to snowboard. OK, I'm not a snowboarder, and I wasn't snowboarding, but I know enough about it to get her linking turns and having major breakthroughs. After 5 runs on the Alpha slope, we hopped over to chair 2 and took 2 runs on Castor. The snow was quite nice and soft, packed powder, not much ice. It began to snow and suddenly we were in a winter wonderland, the snow sticking to the trees, and most importantly, the trails. We only got about an inch, but with each millimeter, the surfaces kept improving. Temps hovering around freezing.

The Channel 10 News guy got us on camera and asked us a few questions. I told him how the conditions were surprisingly very good considering all the warm weather we've had. Sue was not too thrilled when he got her on video while falling as she got off the lift. She asked him that he not put that on TV. We'll find out tmrw what they edited out.

Seven runs which included a number of toe-side face plants was enough to wipe out my friend. So we took a break at the bar and had the monday night special: 2 margaritas and nachos for $10. We munched as we watched the snow accumulate on the trails outside. Sue offered to buy us a 2nd round, but I declined as I wanted to ski for another hour or 2. I told her I had to go ski on my own, so she went back to the Alpha slope to reinforce what she had learned that day while I rode Chair 1 and took a few runs on Iliad and Odyssey before calling it a day at 5pm. Gotta love night skiing, as we are not limited by daylight. A late-day start can be very worthwhile, especially if it starts snowing at 2pm!

Day 14 lift-served, day 3 on telemarks. While I am getting better at telemarking, and it is pretty fun and keeps me challenged and makes me stronger, I still like alpine skiing way better. I don't have any desire to make the full-on change.

I didn't opt to get on a snowboard either, when it would have been a perfect opportunity to give it another whirl. I've done it, and I can honestly say, I don't love it either. I particularly don't like catching the toe-side edge and falling. Been there, done that. I just can't fall like that anymore. I saw Sue take a few good spills and nearly crashed into a tree. I am glad it wasn't me. She did say that her next investment will be in a helmet. She also has never skied. She's learning pretty easily too. I think she'll have it in a few more sessions. She went from not being able to link turns, to linking turns in the first run. Soon I'll have a reliable buddy to go on ski trips with!

Overall a satisfying day.

So actual snow was falling at GP? Great to hear! It's nothing but rain in the valley of the shadow of slush, aka Ithaca.

I think you should convert to snowboarding when not alpine-ing, and give me your tele gear.

Ok, maybe sell at a really great price.

In the meantime, we need a Tompkins County team in the Wednesday night adult race league, which has team-making time trails on the 25th. Are you game?

The Weds night racing is a team league, however, you cannot pick your team. Show up the last weds in January for the seed race. You will take 2 runs and your best time will put you in the ranking from which 'even' teams of 4 will be constructed. Then, the next 4 weeks the teams race against each other. Been doing this for 15+ years. Definitely a fun night out and there's an apres ski party each weds night for the racers. Prizes for all in the end as well.

I am going to Utah the first week of Feb, so I will not be on a team this year, however I will be a 'guest' racer when I am around.

This is a fun league designed to get people to try racing for the first time, as well as get the old racers out in their speed suits trying to out-ski each other. Very sociable and fun. I highly recommend it.

Greek Peak got 5" of snow in the last 24 hours. Get out there!!
