Wow, what a weekend winter wonderland we are having here in central NY!
4-6" of light fluff topped off the 2 feet of snow that fell earlier this week, making for some super bottomless powder all over the mountain.
I wish I had brought my camera to capture the incredibly awesome conditions.
Saturday we skied big soft bumps on the trails and in the glades all day. Fresh snow was still thick and dense, so you still needed good pitch to enjoy it. Most of the mountain isn't steep enough. But we stuck to the steepest trails. Olympian was our favorite.
The best snow was where there was no snowmaking. The natural snow skis so much nicer. It is great that they are leaving more ungroomed and natural conditions. But even on trails like Zeus and Olympian where they made a valiant attempt at putting down enough manmade snow to cover the steep headwall, the manmade was bulletproof and didn't hold the natural snow, but right below the ice face you drop in to the natural snow that skied so sweetly.
All the glades skied very well. Aesop's glade (off chair 2) had the longest powder shots. There is a lot of terrain in that glade that doesn't get tracked out.
Sunday I wasn't planning on going back to Greek Peak because I was having 20 people over for a xc ski and potluck dinner and I had plans to ski at Greek Peak on monday. When I woke up in the morning it was snowing heavily, so I quickly put a bunch of meat and veggies in the crock pot, tidied up the house and headed out to the hill. Parked at Chair 5 and immediatley met up with Pam and her friend. It had snowed 4" or more and it was the perfect topping to the already settling snow from the noreaster. It skied bottomless in the woods where the snow was all natural and untracked. We covered all the black diamond trails, all the glades and even some "off the map glades".
I also skied a few runs with David Hill who participates occasionally in this forum.
I ran into Acid Christ who was on-duty ski patrol and we took a couple of runs together. He let me cut the lift line with him. My last run before heading back to Chair 5 I had chosen to be on Eleysian Fields. AC said he'd do that with me. When I got there, I shot into the woods and he chased behind me. We get way in there and the snow is untracked, soft, fresh and deep. It was dreamy. There were two kids in there and when they saw the ski patrol they had a look of terror. AC said he wasn't going to bust them and then proceeded down the steepest part of that "glade". I found my own fresh line out and we emerged with big grins and giggles.
I could have stayed a few more hours, but I had to get back to take my friends out on my trails. We did two 1 1/2 hr loops. The early group was the trail packin group and the later and larger group (included Pam) got to enjoy the nice skier-groomed trails. We skied until dark and feasted on a delicious array of comfort foods including beef stew, pork roast, roasted root veggies, rice, salad, bread and an assortment of other items, then topped off with blueberry pie and cherry pie, made in Virgil by Bruce Hollenbeck (from the cider mill) as well as home made brownies that Bubba made.
I have tmrw off, so I will be heading back to Greek Peak for more.
