Well, it isn't Stowe, but it was a helluva savings to stay home and enjoy our local hill. I skied with a whole bunch of new friends, people I met earlier this year and people I met today. None of my regular crew was skiing today, so it was a real treat to ski with new people. I arrived alone, but even before I clicked in, I was in good company for the next 5 hours.
The sun softened nicely in the sun by 1pm in most places. The temp was in the mid-30s, bluebird skies.
The best part of the day was meeting someone from Ithaca who is as hardcore as I am and is willing and able to get away and ski on the weekends in VT and the Adks. It seems that my ole pals have other things going on that are keeping them from traveling with me, so making a new friend who is game to go and skis as I do is a big bonus for me for the rest of the season. He even showed me some lines through the woods today that I didn't know were skiable. There was about an inch or 2 of new snow on top of hard base in the woods that was quite skiable. There were lots of trees, limbs and sticks about that required some careful navigation in places, but some nice turns were had in the trees. No glades were officially open, though we skied all of them and beyond. I didn't think the natural base would have survived the last rain, but it did. We skied it and it was good.
