Greek Peak Feb 25, 2010

Broke out of work at noon and was on the snow by 1pm. Hard to say how much there was, maybe 5 or 6" but with continuous replenishment throughout the afternoon.

When I arrived Acidchrist was coming in from his morning rounds for lunch, so I went out by myself to try out my new-to-me Gotamas on the new powder.

Conditions were excellent and I found plenty of untracked locales to haunt.

After riding chairs 1, 4 and 5, skiing in the woods along the way, plus a lap on Zeus, Acidchrist emerged from the shack with his waterskis.

We checked out Hercules both on and off-piste. Everything was skiing quite well.

At 3pm we opened chair 2 and had the whole glade to ourselves.

We had to go back and open chair 1a (remember AC was working...I was just following along). So we did a lap in the Eleysian Fields woods.

We went back to Chair 2 for another run in the barely tracked Aesop's glade and finished off with a run down Olympian for good measure.

The wind picked up and I got really cold. I was dressed warmer than usual, though I was expecting temps near 30 and thick snow that would warm me up, but that was not the case. The snow was powdery and temps remained in the 20s. The problem is that the runs are so short and not that steep that I don't build up enough heat to endure the 10 minute lift ride in the wind. Also, my Gotamas make skiing powder so easy that I was going pretty fast and not working very hard. I was shivering by 4:30 and was ready to call it a day.

I was eager to get in some powder skiing today, as there was NFP in the forecast and I was concerned about conditions for Friday, but it has been snowing pretty hard here all night so far and shows no signs of letting up any time soon. May go out tomorrow though the allure of a bigger mountain may put me in the Subaru for a few hours instead.

What do all those signs say? I mean, it's just a glade......

It's freakin Geek Peak! The signs are for insurance purposes. One of them says "Challenge yourself Ungroomed Trail, if unfamiliar with skiing Nature's snow conditions seek advice from Greek Peak ski instructors". The one below that says "Edge of trail not clearly defined, do not ski outside of orange blazes on the trees" and the last one says "Caution thin cover and bare spots" which is usually what it's like in there. The only place that has some pitch seems to get skied off quickly in typical snow conditions. Yesterday and today were another story. My bet is that by the end of the weekend, the dirt will be showing through again.
