Boston Globe:
200 stranded on chairlift at ski mountain in N.H.
Crews use ropes to evacuate riders
2/16/2004

Nearly 200 skiers and snowboarders at the Gunstock ski area in Gilford, N.H., were left stranded in the frigid February air for up to three hours yesterday when a mechanical failure forced the high-speed Panorama quad chairlift to shut down in mid-run.

Full story here http://tinyurl.com/yvkpv

brrrrrr

Poor them !

I was lucky earlier this year. We got stuck in the chairlift of Mt Alta. It was their first day of the season... little problem.

At least, as they have a 2nd engine working with diesel, the time to go buy some diesel and we were out of there (30 minutes is still long)

I've had the pleasure of three (thats 3)chair evacuations on my resume'.First time was at Killington in early November. They were loading at the mid-station on Cascade wehn some dude came screaming up the ramp(out of control)and the lifty had to pull the chair out of his way, thus derailing the cable from the bullwheel. We were belayed down wuth a harness. The folks who felt daring(and closer to the ground) jumped from the chairs. However they did not enjoy the vouchers that the ski patrol handed out upon rescue that entitled us to a free day.We were only stranded about 45mins that time. The vouchers were cool 'cause it was early season and we only paid like $25 and it was also late in the day.We went back at full operation and had a fun time.
The second time was at Wildcat when a chair actually fell off the cable. The old red chair.I always remembered looking up at the cable and being amazed how the cable was actually braide/woven around the grip.I was stranded that time with two girls on the chair. Now we all know how pretty girls like to show off thier pretty hair by not wearing an ugly hat, right?Well one girl was in tears she was so cold by the time we got down. And that was only for an hour or so!Cant say I felt too bad for her.She sure turned a pretty shade of blue!Just kidding. This time we had to fill out reports and free tix were mailed to us late in the season with experation dates of that year.I used mine but I'm sure lots of people never had the opportunity.
The last time was back at K-Mart agian but I never found out why.Free tix and cocoa made most folks feel better.
I dont know why I'm so lucky.I'm hoping to get rescued from a tram someday!
However one of the highest spots for a lift I can think of is the chair that connects Aroura to Jordan Bowl(?)at Sunday River.I may be wrong on the two mountains but its over that way. It's one of the lifts that runs along the bottom of the mountain. It has one spot that is wicked high!I couldnt imagine the belay from there!
((*
*))NHPH

one of the old wildcat riblets fell off the cable? how the heck does that happen? i figured that the grip being directly inserted into the cable would prevent that from happening. crazy world, huh?
