Hunter snow report wanted

Ok here's the skinny on Hunter, NY and Windham Mountain, NY for this weekend into President's Week:

Went to Windham Mountian as well as Hunter on Saturday. Both places had A LOT of "ICE." Temp was at 7 degrees when we started skiing at 8:30AM. Warmed up a bit though to about 17 degrees by the afternoon and the skiing was much better. Not a good day to break out those "Powda Skis." You're right about the cold temp and ice (in small patches). The powder however was perfect to try my new snowboard at higher speeds. Very windy through latter half of the highest lift. Still, lots of fun.

3 to 6 inches on the way...............which means Hunter will get an inch, Belleayre will get 3 inches, and Plattekill will get 6+.

I am amazed at Hunter's ability to miss snow, especially this year. I don't know if this is partly some creative reporting on the part of Windham, Belleayre, and Plattekill combined with conservative reporting on Hunter's part, or just Hunter's location not being good.

I know in previous years Hunter has really missed out. I skied a day at Windham where the top of the mountain was near 16 inches, and Hunter only reported 8 or so.

Plattekill is just in a perfect location since they pull a lot of lake effect cutting off with their location. Lake effect bands haven't really favored them too much this year though (they do a lot better when we have more of a WNW or NW flow that sends bands down through Syracuse--which hasn't had a lot of lake effect this year).

Hunter is just in the wrong spot...which is why they have a million snowguns. They make their own weather pattern.

I heard a rumor that mountain ops at Hunta doesn't like natural snow. They cover the mountain in manmade so easily and they don't want to have to spend the money to plow the parking lot. Sounds like an urban legend to me but also kinda funny.

I also heard that Plattekill doesn't do any grooming if 8" falls overnight. That's a cool way to save some money.

I checked out Plattekill's website. Looks kinda cool in a down home way. Base elevation of 2400 feet is not too shabby. How's the pitch on those black trails? Is there good tree skiing?

Harvey, you need to mix it up a little, and stop with this all-Gore-all-the-time snobbery.

Plattekill only has 1,100 feet of vertical, but it's got a real nice pitch. With good snow (and I have my fingers crossed for Saturday), there are plenty of trees to ski.

Admin has a classic video in the archives too.

James - from what I'm seeing Plattekill should be in the wheelhouse of this one...with that elevation, you could get alot and maybe all snow. Looks like it's pretty close to the road too...could hit it on the way up.

Gotta say that that is the first time I've ever come across the concept of a "Gore snob." That's comedy! And if you had invested what I did, (and you were as cheap as me), you'd ski the same darn mountain every weekend too.

Admin - thanks for the video link. Looked like a great day on that hill. The teley guy needs to put more weight on his back leg. :)

It's close to a road, but not the one you'll be taking up to Gore. It's a good 45 minute drive from the Thruway on dry roads. I don't know how many times I've planned on going to Plattekill, but by the time I get to Belleayre, I can't deal with another 15-20 minutes in the car and turn into Belleayre instead.

Here are some pix from a while back, but don't worry, nothing's changed:

At least after seeing himself in that video he started making his pole plants on the correct side.

Plattekill is a great little mountain that does not groom after a dump. I sometimes wish they wouldn't groom at all.....as they end up with some real strange ridges in the middle of the runs. The double D runs have a nice pitch, Blockbuster being the steepest. When it get bumped up it can be a challenge.
The mountain is better know for it world class mountain biking. Which means they have some crazy trails buried in the trees. Better know where you are going as you can get lost in neck deep snow back there. But they will find you in the spring.
Cheap food and a good bar upstairs too.

Sounds like they honed their grooming skills at Alta. Marc_C swears that Alta should send their grooming staff to Deer Valley for Remedial Grooming training.

According to Google maps...Plattekill is 185 miles from our place in NJ - 3 hours 40 mins. It's a long way to go when I've got a "free" place to stay, an hour plus farther. Gore is 275 miles and I do it in 5hrs or under. I'm betting Gore has better terrain and Plattekill has more snow. Being farther north, Gore may hold its snow better too. Ok enough of that Gore snobbery.

Plattekill looks great. In the video some of the stuff looked too low angle for the 14" (or whatever) they got that day. But 8" which might be more common, could be sweet. Are there glades next to Fuzz Buster and Double D? How are they about under the rope issues? Maybe I need another cabin up there.

You really can't compare Gore to Platt. Platt is tiny in comparison. And there are no ropes to duck under as far as I know.
