Is Mt. Waterman Circling the Drain?

I was out of town during the big December rains and just came across this footage of a major rockslide / debris flow into the base of Chair 1 and across Highway 2. It's hard to tell the full extent of the damage, but the lift is partially buried in large boulders. If there was going to be a knockout blow to the area, surely this must be it.

From Dec. 26 - Jan. 4 there were 7 days of rain with only one inch of snow in the SoCal ski areas. At the time the big news was the mudslides in Wrightwood, which closed the roads to Mt. High from Dec. 24 - Jan. 9.

Deja vu. The February 2001 storm was more favorable to skiers, dumping 7 feet of snow in 54 hours. However, an avalanche took out the base of Kratka Ridge's single chair and it has never reopened.

It is a statement how far Mt. Waterman has fallen out of public consciousness that it took this long for someone to find out about it and post here. Neither Mt. Waterman's home page nor Facebook page nor Wikipedia page (which I update to document open days each season) has any mention of this obviously important event. I just posted to FB (comment is buried in response to last post in April 2024) and sent an e-mail to mtwaterman@outlook.com

On electric unicycles! They even got into the section of Hwy 39 that has been closed to cars since 1978.
