Me and some friends are really hoping to ski this weekend but can't quite figure out where. Does anybody have any beta on whats left and would be worth the trip. Thanks.
 
I would say your best early season bet would be the big K. But there is hardly much of a cover any more. I hiked for a few turns yesterday and hit quite a few rocks. I would bet killington doesn't open up again untill the date they scheduled of Nov. 11, IF they get a few cold nights to make some white stuff.
 
If you don't mind earning your turns, Jay Peak supposedly have enough snow to ride again this week-end... I'm thinking about going... but i might just go mountain biking once more... Your best chance are over at the Jet or around the Can-Am/Lift line... Everything at the bottom should be very thin... but still rideable...

The Jet I can see, for it faces northeast, but Can Am/Liftline? That would surprise me, for the exposure is southeast. I'd think that the best bet for snow would be around JFK, but with a nasty hike out.
 
From my view of the Green Mtns in Burlington...it appears a lot of the snow is completely gone with the exceptions of patches way up high. Clear view of the Bolton trails today showed the only white appeared very patchy and only on the top 25% of the trails.

4" of snow left at 3,900ft. I'm sure there are drifts somewhere on the upper trails of northern vermont and NH. I'd actually think northern NH and ME might have more skiable snow as they've been slightly cooler and recieved a little more snow to begin with.
 
4" at 3900 on mansfield is bad news. while other areas could have more, especially if they received more natural snow to begin with, would really like a half foot or more to turn on. likely best bets are upper elevation trails at wildcat and kmart that were groomed. most of wildcats trails got groomed, so i suspect the upper trails at the cat are still well covered. but i would expect bare booting up half the mountain to even get into skinnable terrain, let alone skiable. after last week, i am not sure i am so desperate having experienced such great conditions. we'll see i guess, i will wait for first hand reports before deciding if it's worth the hike or not.
 
I would think that the top of Wildcat would still have skiable snow. Mind you the defintion of skiable is not the same for everybody. :lol:
 
A report on skivt-l yesterday told of survival type skiing on the upper trails of Mad River Glen...trail sides that saw drifting snow were still covered by about 6" of glacial rock-hard snow. I'm sure with today's warmth the snow softened and melted a little further but with it being below freezing yesterday at the summits, I bet that snow has consolidated pretty heavily.
 
After what we skiied last weekend I'd consider just about anything thats white skiable. But that was only a 1 hour drive not 4.... The condtions were too bad to take any detailed pics but heres a view from the top.

Big tupper....in tupper lake ny...Been closed for over 5 years now i'm pretty sure. There are plans to open back up next season but from what we saw last weekend nothings happened yet. Lots of trail clearing, lift maintenance and lodge maintenance to be done. Here's a trail map I found in a bunch of trash/lift parts in one of the lift buildings. The best skiing we had was below the liftline at the top after that things just go so thin it was definetly survival skiing...but we basically kept our skiis on all the way to the bottom.

Thanks, I heard of the place and probably have an old map or two of the ski area from ski shows, but I don't think I ever saw a picture of it.

Big Tupper was definately still open when I moved to Ottawa in January 1995.
 
wow, woodie. that's a nice shot of big tupper. never done any NY skiing but that looks cool, especially with the lake. the closed area with a lift tower only having a haul rope on it reminds me of someplace ;) while i hate to see a ski area go the way of nelsap, it is sometimes not as un-used as most people think. as with most things in life, one person's treasue is another person's tragedy. if they don't reopen the place, here's to lots of trees growing in and choice lines being kept clear! :D
 
That was my first time skiing there in probably about 10 years and last time I was there I was too young to really remember much about the place. I hope to do a good bit of skiing there this winter once it fills in a bit more. From what we saw last weekend with a bit more snow it should be a lot of fun.
