A few friends and I planned on heading up to Montreal yesterday to spend
the night. We had a little extra time yesterday afternoon so we figured
that Jay wasn't necessarily on the way, but it wasn't totally out of the
way either. I knew they had some natural snow, probably not enough to
ski, but maybe. I knew they were also blasting the heck out of the Jet
trail so we could always ski that.

We left Burlington a little after 1, got to Jay by 230 and were hiking up
soon after that. The hike up the Haynes on Stateside took about 45 min
and showed me just how out of shape I am for this upcoming season. Saw
plenty of other people hiking and skinning up, anyone else up in
that area yesterday?

We got to the top of Stateside around 330 and hung around on one of the
chairs and the patrol deck enjoying the late afternoon sun and views. The
roar of the guns was incredibly loud but you get used to it after a little
while.

For the ski down, we decided that there wasn't really enough natural snow
to ski on, so we chose the top portion of U.N. and then cut through the
trees onto the Jet. They were blowing snow on the top half of U.N. and
the entire portion of the Jet. There was enough natural snow that you
probably could have managed down the tops of many of the trails,
especially the Haynes where there was snowmaking blow-in, but the
conditions on the snowmaking trails were almost better than a handful of
midseason days. Once we got out onto the Jet, they had some big mounds on skiers left near the guns, but on skiers right near the chair it was super smooth and silky. The snow texture was perfect and the ski conditions featured 2-4 inches of fresh man-made blow on top of a chalky base.

The run was over all to fast, but it was getting dark. We bailed into
Canada very satisfied with the first ski run of the season.

I took a some pics on the hike up and around the top...but then the
battery died and I never got any action shots. Very disappointing but
I'll try to post them later tonight.
