All I can say is WOW! You could not even compare the Jay Peak from my last Jay post (1/10-11?)to the Jay from this week. We went hardcore Wednesday morning, and got up at 3, hit the road by 4, and were at Snowline Lodge by 830, when the normal people were getting ready to go skiing. As usual, Ursula was great and hooked us up with a family pass, so my dad and brothers and me all skied for $160 a day (5 people!). You cannot get a better deal for this big of a mountain out here. Wednesday was an unbelievable day, and took the cake for best skiing day so far this year for me. It was an absolutely cloudless bluebird day, good snow coverage, NO WIND, and temps at a BALMY 25-30 degrees ABOVE zero! You could not ask for a better day, unless of course you got a dump the previous night and woke up to the same conditions with no wind. The mountain was surprisingly empty for it being a school vaca week, and most trails (besides the funnel on the top of upper goat run and upper exhibition) did not get really skied off all day, especially if you knew where to look for the chopped up snow. They blew a bunch of snow on CanAm, and worked pretty hard to try to get it smoothed out really nice. That trail is so much steeper when you are standing at the top looking almost straight down on the park and bonnie lift!. Even though I don’t do much park stuff (I gimped my ankle 2 wks ago anyway) for some reason they didn’t build a pipe yet (strange).
Thursday was a repeat performance. Not much for crowds, a little colder, a bit breezy, and snowy sunshine made the day. The Jet side was absolutely amazing, and stayed that way all day. We ended up building a few jumps over on Derrick Hot shot, and at the end of the day the ski patrol had to kick us off of the mountain for closing because we were still having a jumpfest. I swear sometimes I really want to hide in the woods out there and never leave the damn place.
Overall the mountain is in good shape, as can be seen with the continued open status of the face trails. They could use a little snow to refresh the woods and all the trails, along with continued cold temps. There was word of a decent dump coming for Saturday and Sunday, so if anyone has the chance, get out there!
~Les
